The Tainos Genocide

Genocide is killing a large group of people usually because of race or religion. The Tainos were the indigenous people of the Caribbean. The Spanish were sent over by the king and queen of Spain to go and collect gold from the Tainos. The pope gave them permission to go over and convert the Tainos to Christianity. Columbus was the leader they sent to lead the Tainos to be conquered for Spain. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, but he conquered lands for Spain. The Spanish caused a genocide when they came in contact with the Tainos. I think the pope, the king and queen of Spain, and Columbus’s men are most responsible for the genocide of the Tainos.

They were the people who originally sent Columbus to colonize the land that the Tainos lived on. They told him that he was to go over and take over their lands. In document two, the king and queen say to Columbus, “Because you, Christopher Columbus, are going at our command with some of our ships and personnel to discover and acquire certain islands and mainland in the Ocean Sea, and it is hoped that, with the help of God, some of the islands and mainland in the Ocean Sea will be discovered and acquired by your command and expertise. In document 4, the king and queen said ” They also told him to collect taxes from them. They were supposed to wear a token as proof they paid it and if they were not wearing it, they were to be penalized. “It seems to us that the Indians who have agreed to pay the ordered tax [gold] should wear a token of brass or lead that they can hang from the neck. The design or mark on this token should be changed each time one pays so that it will be known if someone has not paid. Every time persons are found on the island without this token hanging from the neck, have them arrested and given some light penalty.” If they would have never told Columbus to come over and penalize anyone who did not do what they asked, the genocide of the Tainos would probably not have happened.
