In the movie, 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northern, there were a lot of controversial topics involving slavery and religion. I, as well as many others, had many different feelings about the different topics. I felt disgusted, sad, ashamed, and pitiful. I felt disgusted because the way white men treated the slaves, but treated the free black men with class and honor. It really made me think about how much the times have changed just by the way people act towards each other every day in today’s society. If we could always get along, it would make the world a whole lot better place. The way white men treated black men reminded me how rich people treat poor people today. The feeling of sadness I had really came from when he was thinking about
According to the American Historical Association, “When asked about their intense reaction to the film, some described feeling as though they had just experienced slavery. The movie felt believable, they reported, due not only to the caption indicating its basis in fact, but because the setting and characters looked authentic” (Toplin, 1). That just goes to show how historically accurate the makers of the film were going for to show just how bad slavery really was, even if it repulses people. There are historians out there who on the record confirmed the historical accuracy of 12 Years a Slave. “At least two historians, Sue Eakin, and Joseph Logsdon, have confirmed that Northup presented a remarkably accurate picture of antebellum slavery and plantation society near the Red River in Louisiana” (Toplin, 1). For historians to say that the film is “remarkably accurate” shows the seriousness those involved went to, to ensure the historical accuracy
Throughout the colonial period and the time leading up to the American civil war, one of the most important and controversial topics facing Americans was the idea of slavery. The notion of slavery is an odd and incredibly horrifying concept, that one man can own another man, or two men, or an entire family, just because of the color of their skin. No doubt the idea was racist and repulsive, but to many Men and Women in history, across the country and across the world, slavery was just a part of everyday life: they knew no different. So when those people who were being stripped from their homeland and brought over on ships to be sold at auction to the highest white bidder, began to question the sacredness of this terrible
One of the first things that attracted the African American slaves to Christianity was a way of obtaining the salvation of theirs souls based on the Christian’s idea of a future reward in heaven or punishment in hell, which did not exist in their primary religion. The religious principles inherited from Africa sought purely physical salvation and excluded the salvation of the soul. However, they did believe in one supreme God, which made it easier for them to assimilate Christianity.
This movie shows all of the horrible things that are incorporated with war, in excruciating detail. At one point in the movie Scarlet has to witness a man get his leg amputated with no anesthesia, or anything for pain at all due to lack of funds, and lack of ability to get the medicines that were necessary. The accuracy of the film though is somewhat biased. The book was written by a southern woman, and frankly I’m sure had some resentment towards the North, she wrote this book glamorizing the South and making the North look horrendous. They were fighting to free slaves, whereas the South wanted to keep their slaves. The movie for the most part only seems to portray slaves with kind master and the truth of the matter is, no matter how good and kind the master was, the black people were slaves. They were considered property and as such, could be bought, sold, used and abused, and treated like cattle, not people. The slaves were not free. They had no legal rights, because they were not a person under the law. Their "owners" had complete control of their lives. They were not free to go anywhere or do anything without their master’s approval. The master had the right to separate husband and wife, parents and children. It was very rare that an entire slave family would remain intact. There was always the fear of being sold. Because of death or bankruptcy, families were separated and sold to fulfill
In the film slavery by another name shows that slavery never ended because slavery took another form as convict leasing system. Convict leasing system is taking prisoners to private parties and forcing them to do involuntary servitude. The main idea of the film is that African American never gain full freedom. The reason why they were being oppressed because white southerners always wanted to be seen as superior instead of equals. Also they fear the competition for jobs and basic rights. When African American were gaining rights poor white southerners started to form a vigilante groups to attack and intimidate them. Since it was the period of radical reconstruction it protected African American civil rights but all that change when the balance
The film 12 Years a Slave, an adaptation of the 1853 autobiography by a slave named Solomon Northup, depicts his everyday life after his rights and freedoms are ripped away. Through the unpleasant slave auction scenes to the sickening slave punishments, 12 Years a Slave is a heartbreaking story that unfortunately conveys the harsh truth on the issues surrounding slavery. Consequently, during the film there are many themes and events that trigger different thoughts and reactions varying between viewers, and importantly a better understanding of Solomon Northup’s story and slavery itself.
12 Years a Slave was an outstanding representation of the lives of a slave. It was accurate, heartfelt, and detailed. It portrays the feelings of Solomon and the other slaves perfectly. The film really makes you think about the people and the situation back in the 1840’s. It is an exceptional historical film that teaches you the slavery times and the life of Solomon Northup. A freeman turned to a slave and put through a terrible life experience that no one should ever have to go
12 Years a Slave details the life of Solomon Northup and his experience as a slave on plantations in Louisiana. He was illegally captured and sold by a slave trader, James Burch while traveling with his violin skills. He was sold to Ford, the master who he is most fond of. He was then sold to Tibbits, who was randomly violent towards Solomon. He had many fights with him, even whipping him once. Lastly, he was sold to Epps. He was the most violent towards Solomon. He was made to whip his fellow slaves. When Bass, a contractor hired by Epps came to the plantation, Solomon made a third attempt to send letters home to Saratoga Springs. Lawyers eventually came to free Solomon. Many historians view the book as an important historical account as
Although the the writings are about two different types of slavery at two different times, they are still very similar. Experience and Power are central themes that are similar in both Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas and Slave Girl. However, there are opposing themes are Religion and Reasoning.
Religion is an organized system of practices based on belief or faith in divine forces. It has been a cornerstone institution of all known societies dating back to prehistoric times There is not a single culture recorded in human history which has not practiced some form of religion. It is a system that has both bonded mankind together and given them social guidance to set our standards of living by. But it is a system has had many negative ramifications on civilization and has played a cruel role in justifying ignorance and some of the worst actions that have to have taken place in human history. Question must be addressed then, is religion more detrimental to civilization than constructive and is it still a necessity for the people or are
Whites have long argued that slavery was good for slaves because it civilized them and that slaves were content to be held in bondage. But such is not the case, at least not according to those who were actually held in bondage. The accounts of slavery are greatly known by emancipated or run away slaves. One recorded account of slavery is by Solomon B. Northup’s autobiography, Twelve Years a Slave which was published in 1853.
Since the beginning of civilisation, it is undeniable human beings have been subjected to horrific atrocities that have been brought upon by the behaviour of other human beings. One part of history that never should be forgotten is the profound injustice inflicted upon slaves, specifically African-Americans in the United States. The mass discrimination and mistreatment imposed upon the slaves in this period is brought to light in Steve McQueen’s film, Twelve Years a Slave; one of the more famous slave narratives based on the true accounts of Solomon Northup, a free-born African American who was deceived, abducted and enslaved during the antebellum of the United States. The deprivation of freedom and incalculable violence against the black
12 Years a Slave is a drama movie released in 2013 and directed by Steve McQueen.
The term slavery today has dreadfully dark connotations. We associate it with cruelty and injustice. We think of the United states, the deep south, the brutalising of African Americans, or more recently maybe the critically acclaimed 2013 epic historical drama film ‘12 Years a Slave’ Yet slavery is embedded in almost every society’s history and in past times was not seen as an inhumane practice. In fact slavery was practiced right here in Australia and for the purposes of this essay in the North-West of Australia. Not only did a systematic method of slavery exist in Australia it continued to exist long after it was abolished across British empire and many other countries in the rest of the world. Slavery has left a nasty scar on the history of the world and predates written history records. Slavery takes many shapes, sizes and forms, and as a result is difficult to adequately define. Slavery in its most elementary form can be understood as the state or condition of being a slave; a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his livelihood and liberty, There is an argument for which many people are divided over, whether Aboriginal people were slaves at the pastoral stations in the North west or just employees in slave like conditions.
In the film Twelve Years a Slave, the treatment of slaves in the antebellum South is portrayed as cruel and inhumane. The film depicts the diversity of slavery as a living hell for every black person in America. The film does this by emphasizing on the kidnapping, rape, separation of families, humiliation, abuse, and torture. Slaves and black people were treated as an inferior race of people.
