In the novel, Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse, Billie Jo is introduced, a young girl who lives in Oklahoma during the dust bowl. During her life, Billie Jo faces many hardships and problems, but learns to never lose sight of hope. Hesse develops many themes throughout the novel, hope being one of them. Even in the darkest of times in life, the darkness will turn to light.
never giving up means that you'll keep trying even if you fail over and over. determination is a very powerful trait for leadership. determination and motivation are contagious. never giving up is believing in yourself even if no one else will. never giving up is about committing yourself to something and following through with it. knowing that there will be set backs and failure but also knowing that you'll learn from your mistakes. never giving up means not compromising yourself and staying strong. even if you never achieve your goal there will be a sense of fulfillment knowing that you did your best. persistence is really important and you should always keep trying.
Ishmael Beah was a boy from Sierra Leone who became a soldier in the country`s tragic civil war. He spent nearly all his childhood running away from the war and eventually ended up joining the army. During difficult times, Ishmael always held on to hope to continue his life’s journey. In A Long Way Gone, the theme is “Always have hope”, and is shown through Ishmael Beah’s hope for a better life, to find his family, and through the rehab staff`s hope for the boy soldiers.
