There is the motivation to perform in a business setting, the motivation to perform on the field of competition, the motivation to provide for friends and family, and the motivation to accomplish goals that have been set. These are all various motivations that any one person can be involved with at any time. Upon doing more research I found a website that names and explains 6 different types of motivation.

I put a high importance on the most important items first such as groceries, dog food, and gas expenses. Although after analyzing my spending habits, I have realized that almost all of my purchases are wants, rather than needs. I always feel like I need more clothes and to eat out, however, in reality I have plenty of clothes and a house full of food. I usually decide what to purchase because it sounds good or looks good in that moment of time; however, after I make the purchase I often feel a little guilty, which is an obvious problem.

The MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) has given me insightful information over 4 different dichotomies: 1)Where I focus my attention 2) How I take in information 3) How I make decisions based on the information and 4) How I deal with the world. After completing the assessment, I was dubbed ‘INTJ’. This being 9% Introvert, 38% iNtuitive, 3% Thinking, and 31% Judging. To my surprise, after reading the detailed report, I found most of the information presented, to be ‘spot on’. According to the Center for Confidence and Well-Being, “Of all the personality types, INTJs are most motivated by “vision”. They have a great need to come up with a unifying idea of a future, improved state, which is then their job to realize. This inner vision can be so strong for INTJs and so individual that they are often reckoned to be the most independent-minded of all the types” (Craig, C., 2014). This provided me with great validation that I have been lucky enough to find myself in the right career. Currently, I am the interim Director of Quality at an acute care hospital in San Diego. Daily, myself and my team are looking for ways to improve hospital processes, systems, and relationships. Always striving for a future vision or ‘ideal state’ of how we would like to see our organization functioning to better serve our community. I strongly believe that motivation is pre-positioned on what we believe - our convictions. Therefore, in order to know if our motives are right we have to know ourselves, examine ourselves, know what our convictions are, and have the courage to stand by them.

Affective motives deal with the need to reach satisfying feeling states and to obtain personal goals (Hawkins, 2010). Another shopping situation on my personal consumption is line 15 page 2, April 14, 2012, my family on an impulse spent $143.07 dollars on recreational products. Even after this shopping situation, I could not understand how or why I allowed my family that is trying to save money spend so much of it. However slowly understanding our purchasing behaviors, I can understand that it relates to the need for tension reduction and some hedonic shopping motives. People encounter situations in their daily lives that create uncomfortable levels of stress. In order to effectively manage tension and stress, people are motivated to seek ways to reduce arousal.      The three passions that have dictated the direction of my life have been sports, friends and family. My first passion, sports, has guided me through temptations such as drugs and dropping out of school and has kept me on the right track. My second passion, much the same as my first has helped to deflect the many temptations of life. It is my friends who have stuck with me through the ups and downs and it is to them that I owe much of what I am today. My third and strongest passion is my family, and more specifically my father. He brought me up as a single father when my mother wanted nothing to do with me; he fought to give me what he could and it is to him that I owe everything.
