The True Hero Of Odysseus In Homer's Odyssey

The story “The Odyssey” describes the eventful travel of the warrior Odysseus, who is also the king of Ithaca, after a war known as the “Trojan War”. Odysseus performed many heroic actions during his travel. Odysseus also performed some unheroic deeds, but he is only a human being, he also makes mistakes. A true hero never gives up and uses everything he can to overcome any trials or hardships he must face. Odysseus is a hero because even though he was away for almost 20 years, he still remains faithful to his wife and his home. Even if he was away for a very long time, the thought of home and his family granted him strength to be able to overcome many hardships and adversities. Odysseus has also denied to stay with the goddess Calypso, saying “My lady goddess, there is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope would seem a shade before your majesty death and old age being unknown to you, while she must die. Yet, it is true each day I long for home, long for the sight of home” (654). This represents his willpower and his loyalty to his family. Another trait that Odysseus possesses that makes him a true hero is being able to overcome all the extreme dangers that he has encountered and that his courage never wavers. After Odysseus left Polyphemus’s cave, he shouted at Polyphemus “If ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye” (669). Even if Odysseus was too prideful and provoked Polyphemus when they almost have escaped safely, Odysseus was a great warrior and he felt that blinding Polyphemus and being able to outsmart him was a great achievement and that it should be spread throughout the land, even if giving his name caused great danger to his men and himself.
