The story “The Odyssey” describes the eventful travel of the warrior Odysseus, who is also the king of Ithaca, after a war known as the “Trojan War”. Odysseus performed many heroic actions during his travel. Odysseus also performed some unheroic deeds, but he is only a human being, he also makes mistakes. A true hero never gives up and uses everything he can to overcome any trials or hardships he must face. Odysseus is a hero because even though he was away for almost 20 years, he still remains faithful to his wife and his home. Even if he was away for a very long time, the thought of home and his family granted him strength to be able to overcome many hardships and adversities. Odysseus has also denied to stay with the goddess Calypso, saying “My lady goddess, there is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope would seem a shade before your majesty death and old age being unknown to you, while she must die. Yet, it is true each day I long for home, long for the sight of home” (654). This represents his willpower and his loyalty to his family. Another trait that Odysseus possesses that makes him a true hero is being able to overcome all the extreme dangers that he has encountered and that his courage never wavers. With his cleverness and wits, he was able to help …show more content…
After Odysseus left Polyphemus’s cave, he shouted at Polyphemus “If ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye” (669). Even if Odysseus was too prideful and provoked Polyphemus when they almost have escaped safely, Odysseus was a great warrior and he felt that blinding Polyphemus and being able to outsmart him was a great achievement and that it should be spread throughout the land, even if giving his name caused great danger to his men and himself. Odysseus is still a human and his mistakes can only be regarded as one trait of being
Constantly throughout the book, Odysseus shows great courage in any and every situation he is put in. We see this glimpse of courage when he fights the suitors, or when he saves his whole crew from the Cyclops. In book 9 as Odysseus and his crew are journeying through the cave of a Cyclops, Odysseus decides to make a very bold decision and blinds the Cyclops. “Hoisting high that olive stake with its stabbing point, straight ingo the monsters eye they rammed it hard.” (page 223, line 427-428) In this scene Odysseus drives a stake into his eye, in result blinding him. This was a very courageous decision because of the fact that he and his men are up against a Cyclops. At the same time, Cyclops’s are very strong and big, and Odysseus could have easily been killed . It turns out that the Cyclops is a offspring of Poseidon which put him and his crew into a lot of trouble and danger later in their journey, and if Odysseus knew that or not it was still a brave thing to do in order to save him and his crew at that moment.
In the book The Odyssey, a general from Ithaca, named Odysseus, has gone through a long journey to get home from the war in Troy. He and his crew have faced many rigorous unexpected challenges on their way home. On this journey, Odysseus has tried to be the hero and have everyone come out alive, but he was not successful. The actions of Odysseus, during his journey, does not qualify him as a hero. He is dishonest to his crew and friends and he takes them for granted.
Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and the main character in homer’s The Odyssey, was gone for twenty years before finally returning to his family and his homeland. He struggled through many hardships and lost many loyal companions. The King of Ithaca would not have made it home without the assistance of the Greek gods. Despite all of the help and advice that Odysseus receives from the gods, he is a very brave man because his courage and daring in the cave of the Cyclops, his inability to give up and abandon his men on Circe’s island, and his flawless following of the gods instructions are acts of bravery that is uncommon in most men.
Odysseus heroic qualities are strength, courage, dignity, a thirst for glory, and self-confidence. He also shrewd and ingenious, all of which make him the ideal hero in both the physical form and the spiritual aspect. Odysseus being faithful and loyal to his wife shows his dignity. Even though he has been away from his home and family for twenty years his only thoughts are with them. He overcomes all the extreme dangers he encounters showing his strength and courage. His shrewdness and intelligence shows when he, the King of Ithaca, is disguised as a beggar before Telemakhos.
Odysseus is a hero because he acts courageously while facing the many challenges he encounters. Odysseus’s shows great bravery when he engages in physical challenges. Odysseus daringly fights against the suitors, while significantly outnumbered: “For I must
Throughout history, poets, authors, and directors have created characters labeled as “heroes”. These figures can be brave and kind; they can be strong and intelligent, but regardless of the attributes these “heroes” possess, they reflect those valued and admired by the people of that time and culture. Homer, the author of book nine of The Odyssey, “In the One-Eyed Giant’s Cave,” used the character Odysseus to appear heroic by showcasing the traits readers would find most desirable in a person. Homer showed such characteristics in Odysseus when he wrote him to be brave when confronted with danger, intelligent in problem-solving, and extremely loyal to his homeland.
For generations, heroes have always fascinated people and people have strived to achieve certain qualities of their heroes. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is considered the hero of the story. While Odysseus does demonstrate some qualities that are not heroic, he is still defined as a hero because of his better, more heroic qualities in which he is far superior in than any other man. The qualities in which define Odysseus as a hero are courage, intelligence, and leadership.
In the end, I think Odysseus is a hero because although he does make mistake and although no one is perfect he tried his best to get him and his men home safely. Odysseus has many good qualities consisting of quick thinking, creativity, protectiveness, and many more. He also has bad qualities like curiosity and ignorance. So even though people make mistakes and don’t always do the right thing I think that they can still be a
In conclusion Odysseus is a true hero even though he was thoughtless, selfish and deceitful. However he had respect for the gods (Athene), a strong sense of duty, (will always go back for his men) showed great honour and was highly regarded by his men and peers. He was a role model for his son Telemachus who wanted to be like him. He also showed great Athleticism which was very important and highly regarded. He was very competitive and tried to be better than anyone else and insured his name lived on forever. This is a sign of a true
Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus experiences many ups and downs throughout his journey home. He is throw into peril and there often seems to be no hope for his return home. While he remains victorious in the end, returning to his wife, son, and father, the poem itself is filled with many darker moments filled with doubt and sadness. Odysseus is the hero of the Odyssey, and in order to exist as a hero he must be relatable. His story cannot be one entirely of triumph, it must include a more human perspective. Triumph cannot come without strife, and heroism cannot come without tribulation. Athena and Odysseus’ experiences as divine and human, respectively, and define whether or not they are heroes. By comparing Odysseus to Athena, it is apparent that what makes Odysseus a hero before anything else is his humanity.
Odysseus is classified as an epic hero in the “ Odyssey.” In the story Odysseus wanders around the ocean and islands in search for his solution to get back home safely. Although he wanders for twenty years without his family, just crew members, he possess characteristics of being a brave warrior, a loyal husband, and a creative mind tricking person.
His bravery also took him a long way. Escaping the island would be one example of that. He had a son named Telemachus. Odysseus went to visit his family after the escape, and only found his guards plotting on taking his royalty and taking him off the drone. Little did they know he was on his way to regain his reputation and power. The first few guards he ran into were at his gate sipping on his wine and everything else that was his. So he killed them and anyone trying to betray him.He gained his power back and was recognized as a hero. In the end it was a must to redeem himself to keep his power and word of
“I am Odysseus, son of Laertes, known to the world for every kind of craft- my fame has reached the skies.” The Odyssey page 212. This quote sounds to describe a great hero, one who everyone loves, everyone knows. However, this man can not be described as a hero because it alone shows the traits that no hero has been known to have. The quality of arrogance takes Odysseus over and puts him and his men in danger. Dishonesty does not put him in danger, but hurts his family with little care from Odysseus. He also can not control his impulses, and this creates difficult situations. Odysseus can not be considered a hero because of his arrogance, deceitfulness, and impulses.
Odysseus things his own way, and that is a similar trait to a hero. A hero is someone who follows directions, but also does what needs to get done to survive. Odysseus puts his own twist on things to get things done. The way Odysseus does things may not be the quickest technique, or the most thorough, but the task gets done. Odysseus is his own type of hero in ways most people can’t decipher. I believe
Odysseus’ craftiness sets him apart from the other characters as a hero because he succeeds when others fail.
