In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, irony is an underlying theme used throughout the story. A lottery is typically thought of as something positive because it usually involves winning something such as money or prizes. Although in this lottery, it is not what is won, but what is lost. Irony often makes people laugh but in other times, gasp; such is the case with Jackson’s short story.
