John Steinbeck the author of the novella of mice and men uses techniques, such as characterisation, contrast and setting to exhibit ideas such as innocence, prejudice and the American dream. Steinbeck displays the idea of innocence, through the technique of the characterisation of Lennie. Additionally, the idea of prejudice is conveyed through the technique of contrast, between dark skinned and light skinned people. Moreover, the idea of the American Dream is emphasised throughout the setting of the novella. This shows that John Steinbeck uses different techniques to explore various ideas. The novella of mice and men written by John Steinbeck uses the technique of characterisation, of Lennie, to focus on the idea of innocence. He uses the setting, to exhibit the American Dream by showing that where they are, at the ranch, is not the place anyone wants to be but has to be to make money to survive. This is proven throughout the whole book talking about from the beginning that George and Lennies Dream was to get a little place and "An' live on the fatta the lan'."When Candy and Crooks hears about their plan they also want to join because no one really enjoys being on the ranch. Candy even goes as far as offering to give them all of his money so they can buy a place as long as he can come as well. Although, the reader finds out that this is not only their dream, but many others before them have had the same idea. When Crooks mentions that he's "...seen too many guys with land in their head. They never get none under their hand." This then proves that the American Dream at that time was to get a piece of land to yourself so you could be happy and living on the ranch was not anyone's dream place to
