Everyone, at at least one point in their lives, has had a desire to connect with some kind of technology, or at least a device that makes their lives easier. Some people have a constant desire, to the point where their cupidity takes over their lives. In “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, this and many other themes are manifested using various crafts such as exquisite detail or foreshadowing what is to come in the story. In the story, the family is surrounded by technology; their expensive house cleans, cooks, and puts them to sleep. The greatest addition to this house, however, is a huge nursery with walls that change color to represent other scenery. The detail that describes the nursery for the first time is incredible, elucidating “the crystalline
Ray Bradbury's “The Veldt” is a powerful and dreadful story about the impact of technology on people that is easily compared to the modern world. Bradbury states that the existence of technology itself affect people's behavior, while its misuse can lead to dire consequences such as developing an addiction, psychological alienation, family disruption and even
“As cities grow and technology takes over the world, belief and imagination fade away, and so do we”(Julie Kagawa). While technology spreads and completely takes over one’s life, the electronic wave cannot be tamed. Once society fails to take control of their lives over technology, they lose contact with our loved ones and reality, as well as the ability to think for one’s self. In the dystopian world from Fahrenheit 451 technology is found everywhere, and the people highly depend on it to do hard work for them or for entertainment purposes. Bradbury illustrates a society that has lost the ability to enjoy life without technology through a variety of characters that rely on unnatural and modern objects to fill the void of an emotionless society.
Technology is a helpful tool that society has become accustomed to using. However, the overuse of technology can lead to disaster. In “The Veldt” and “There Will Come Soft Rains”, Ray Bradbury explores the power that technology holds through the use of futuristic gadgets. Both stories contain smart homes that provide everything for the humans living in the house and show the destruction caused by it. Through these technological advancements, the reader sees how mankind is being defeated by its own creation in mental and physical ways. Bradbury uses the superior technology of the smart home, the replacement of humans for the newest electronics, and the dependence of technology on humans to explain that overindulgence of these modern appliances can have drastic results.
“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity” (Albert Einstein.) As humanity progresses, it seems that people use technology to disconnect themselves from reality. “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury showcases humankind’s obliviousness to the frightening shadow looming over it, technology. Throughout the story, it reinforces the idea that technology has its own issues. “Stuff your eyes with your wonder, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories” (Ray Bradbury.) This short story reflects Ray Bradbury’s mindset outside of his writing and the quote sheds light on the author’s point of view. As the quote elaborates, nothing can beat
Ray Bradbury once said, “Why go to a machine when you could go to a human being.” This statement has become progressively true as an increasing number of people rely more on0 technology than they do human interaction. They prefer to depend on the screens in front of them, thus farther removing themselves from society. In “The Veldt,” Ray Bradbury uses foreshadowing and figurative language to convey that separation from family is initiated by dependence on technology.
We rely on technology nowadays to do simple tasks for us like dry our hair, research answers on the web, and watch television for entertainment and for the news. Technology is being over used for very simple things, what if we relied on them too much as a whole for us to forget doing simple task? Would it be helpful to us that we rely on technology to do everything for us? In the story "The Veldt", the author Ray Bradbury communicates that the misuse of technology can lead to unforeseen disadvantages, he demonstrates the theme through his uses of imagery and symbolism.
Ray Bradbury written a story about how technology made a perfectly normal family into a completely corrupted family which is called, The Veldt. The Veldt is a science fictional story featuring a nursery that change the appearance in the inside. The family in the house had two kids named Wendy and Peter who were abusing the nursery to the point of having Africa as the basis of the nursery’s appearance. This was until the mother and father of the kids, Lydia and George Hadley tried to stop this from actually happening and the children locked the parents into the nursery to only die after that. The theme of The Veldt is that relying on technology can destroy personal relationships. The tools that are being used is the characters feelings and actions,
“All kinds of creative possibilities are made possible by science and technology which now constitute the slave of man, if man is not enslaved by it” as quoted by Jonas Salk during a speech about the technological advances in modern medicine in the 1950s. In the short stories by Ray Bradbury, he illustrates how the characters are struggling to live with the futuristic capabilities of technology. “The Pedestrian” focuses on a man named Leonard Mead who is the only person in society who does not use the technology in his home, his hobby is to walk. However, he is viewed as an outcast. “The Veldt” focuses on how George and Lydia Hadley figure out how their children’s nursery is powered by their mind and how they use it to have a tragic advantage over their parents in the end. While technology can let people connect to others much more efficiently, Ray Bradbury shows how the characters in his short stories “The Pedestrian” and “The Veldt” prove how technology is capable of isolating people from reality.
“I don’t understand it. What I do understand, I don’t like… But that’s beside the point…” This quote relates to a key theme of Inherit the Wind. We must be open minded to new discoveries, theories or evidence. You do not have to agree with it, but you have to acknowledge it. In the story, there were laws passed to prevent evolution from being taught in schools, which shows that the town did not want to even consider what evidence could be provided by evolution. Religion made the town close minded to any other views, and people’s thoughts were dictated and controlled by the ideas of religion. The key theme of the book is to always be open minded, and to not allow anyone or anything to control how you think- you can be persuaded by certain things,
V for Vendetta sets the Gunpowder Plot as V's historical inspiration, contributing to his choice of timing, language and appearance For example, the names Rookwood, Percy and Keyes are used in the film, which are also the names of three of the Gunpowder conspirators. The film creates parallels to Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, by drawing direct comparisons between V and Edmond Dantès. (In both stories, the hero escapes an unjust and traumatic imprisonment and spends decades preparing to take vengeance on his oppressors under a new persona.) The film is also explicit in portraying V as the embodiment of an idea rather than an individual through V's dialogue and by depicting him without
Ray Bradbury’s short stories: “The Veldt”, “Zero Hour”, and “Marionettes, Inc.”, all show the consequences of technology when they are in the wrong hands. The first short story in Bradbury’s novel, The Illustrated Man is “The Veldt”, which

In today's culture people use technology to their advantage all the time. They use it to hack, to learn the latest gossip, or to see breaking news around the world. But, sometimes they get obsessed and instead of a handy tool, it becomes a necessity and a lifestyle. In the story, The Veldt, Ray Bradbury uses imagery, symbolism, and internal conflict to express that misuse of technology can lead to unforeseen disadvantages.
