The Things They Carried
In Tim O’Brien's “The Things They Carried,” is a short story that talks about love, burden and offering. It is narrated by Tim O’ Brien and his experience throughout the Vietnam War and all the battles that he was in. Through this explanation of the war, you can tell that it distinguishes the physical feature of the war and the emotional or psychological feature. Tim O’Brien, shows us that the idea of the mental loads outweigh the physical pain that those in war may have carried. For example one quote from the story is ”They carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die. Grief, terror, love, longing--these were intangibles, but the intangibles had their own mass and specific gravity, they had tangible weight" (O’Brien 574). O’Brien had argued that fear and responsibility that the soldiers experience far override the physical torture that they must have endured in order to stay alive, loads that are ease by the hope of returning home. The mental loads that most likely weighs the most on the soilders hearts is fear. The soldiers are constantly reminded by the fear that they might die. Ted Lavender’s death shows its impact on the soldiers because of how they reacted. Ted Lavender’s death is drawnout as being massive and heavy on their mind sets. The death of Lavender is repeated several times throughout the story. The reason why for the repetition is to show the fear in the men.
