The Western Roman Empire was a magnificent realm, ruling for over 500 years, but even the greatest fall down at some point. There were multiple variables, in the fall of this empire, but four aspects stood out amongst the rest. There were multiple political issues, economical problems, deadly diseases, and foreign invaders who devastated Rome and caused the empire's downfall.
One critical aspect in the fall of the Western Roman empire were the political issue in the government. Several Emperors in Rome were unfit for the throne, for many different reasons. Numerous numbers of them were greedy, and only looked out for their own well being, instead of all of the citizens. A big chunk of them, had inherited the throne from their ancestors, and

Citizens from all around Rome crowded into cities, where pollution, illness and death were present. Overpopulation, was a big issue, and still is, because of the spreading of germs. Also the Romans had lead pipes that carried their water around, lead dishware, aqueducts with lead, and lead utensils. This substance got inside their bodies, and diseased and killed many. Thousands of everyday citizens got lead poisoning. Along with lead, another problem was spreading quickly, malaria. Recent bone test, of the ancient Romans, go to show that many had the common, but deadly malaria. Carried by the ever present mosquitos, it spread fast. By 262 CE thousands of people were dying daily, because of lead poisoning, malaria and more diseases. The conditions became so bad, that when Attila the Hun came to attack Rome, he retreated, for fear of catching malaria. These are a few of the diseases, that helped in the fall of the Roman …show more content…
The western Roman Empire, was humongous, and that did not help in the attempts to protect it. Rome couldn’t build borders, or boundaries around itself, because there weren’t enough legionnaires to guard them. Instead they decided to use natural borders to keep foreigners out. For example, the mountains, Rhine river, and Danube River. Speaking of legions, the army’s started to focus less, and less on their job protecting Rome, and more on their salary, and emperors. This was a dilemma, because it weakened the legions greatly. Around this time Rome had hired Germanic mercenaries to fight with them, but they had their own ideas. The mercenaries started to turn against Rome itself. To make matters worse, these Germanic tribes invaded Rome, destroying aqueducts for the Roman cities. By destroying the aqueducts, the tribes were restraining the Romans from having fresh drinking, and bathing water in their cities, this was a major issue for Rome. Then, the rivers in which Rome used as borders, froze over, and invaders learned that they could travel across the ice into the cities of Rome. This made coming into Rome very simple for the Germanic tribes. In the year 410 CE, the Germanic Chief Alaric, lead the Germanic tribes in to invade Rome, devastating the citizens. Once inside they burned down Rome itself killing
One reason the Roman Empire fell was because cities surrounding Rome invaded. According to Document Six, which is a map of Barbaric Invasions of the Roman Empire Prior to 476, shows that cities such as Goths, Ostrogoths, and Carthage all fled and invaded Rome. Other cities like Adrianople, Visigoths, Vandals, and Huns had all invaded as well . If you think about it, that is about seven cities that invaded Rome and that would be a lot for
The Western Roman Empire was the greatest empire of its time. However, all good things must come to an end, so slowly, but surely, it did. It was unable to withstand many of the consequences that came with major responsibilities and power. As a result, slavery, economic dilemmas, government downfalls, weak leaders, a change of religion, and an unsteady military led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
To begin with, one of the main problems of the Roman Empire was their economic problems and corruption. For example, in an excerpt of a historical text written by Priscus, which was a Roman ambassador to the Huns in 449 C.E, he reported a conversation he had with a former citizen whose land had been conquered by the Huns. In their conversation the former Roman citizen stated, “ The conditions of [Roman] subjects in time of peace [is worse than war]...taxes are very severe, and unprincipled men inflict injuries on others… A [wealthy lawbreaker] … is not punished for his injustice, while a poor man … undergoes the legal penalty… The climax of misery is to have to pay in order to obtain justice…” This supports that one main problem that ended the Roman empire was economic problems and corruption because it shows that if rich people in Rome committed a crime they would only have to bribe their way out of trouble while on the other hand poor people will have to face their consequences which is unfair so when they got invaded by the Huns they decided that it was best if they conquered than to join the military to help their empire. In addition another economic problem is that the the Roman Emperors had to pay their own soldiers to stay loyal which lead to emperors having to mint more coins which is further supported by BrainPop which states, “Roman emperors often bribed their soldiers with money to make sure they remained loyal. And when emperors didn’t have enough to pay their troops, they would mint cheaper coins. This caused the value of Roman money to plummet.” This also supports that one important cause that caused the Roman Empire to decline was the corruption and economic problems because in order for a empire or a civilization to function efficiently, they need to respect all people
However, at the end of Pax Romana, 180 A.D the empire began to decline. The fall of the western Roman Empire was due to many contributing factors in the political, social, economic, and military areas. The decline on the economic areas also contributed to the fall of the western Roman empire. According to Document 4, “Part of the money went into… the maintenance of the army and of the vast bureaucracy required by a centralized government..
The Western Roman Empire fell due to the loss of ambition, economic issues, and a despairing military. The Western Roman Empire was powerful empire with astounding achievements. Their overpower and greatness brought complication as time went on. The change of government leaders and religion had a big impact on the fall of the Western Roman Empire. As the issues began to rise the powerful empire began to fall.
“We live in a dangerous world and we have a few good options, but the worst option is to do nothing.” Allan Trumbull. From the year 50 BCE till the year 200 CE, the empire prospered, as it slowly began to fall apart. Some of the reasons for the “Fall of Rome” were because of its internal problems due to Rome itself as others were external.
The Romans had huge lands that were very difficult for one person to control which made it extremely easy for invaders to take advantage and invade their lands. The three invaders that came from Asia were the Huns, Vandals, and Ostrogoths (Doc C). The invasions were mostly unexpected by the Roman people and thought they could easily take them off, not until suddenly three groups arrived at different locations that slowly weakened down the locals and armies at Rome. This attack was what really made Rome to fall apart. If it wasn’t for the foreign invasions, Rome would have been an empire that would have lasted for another few thousand
The Romans lost all control and leadership in their army. “They could not organize to protect themselves; they could not serve in the army.” (Doc1) Also, they could not support and keep up with the maintenance of the army, so they had to rely on the citizens more. “The military crisis was the result of proud, old aristocracy’s shortage of children...army composed entirely of Germans.” To simplify: there were less and less children born and raised to go into the Roman army. This led to recruiting foreigners into their army- mostly Germans. According to the map in Document 6, the Western Roman Empire was struck by many, scattered invasions. The military could not unite to protect the empire, leading to the
The Western Roman Empire fell due to many flaws. However, it fell mainly due to invasions from external enemies, economics, and a discouraged society. Therefore, the empire began to slowly decline. This expansive empire fell not due to one, but many faults made over a time period. To this day the empire is remembered as one of the most advanced of its time.
One of the many reasons that caused the fall of the Roman Empire was the Barbarian Invasions. All of the devastating Barbarian Invasions of the Roman Empire caused it to fall prior to 476. Though the attacks weren’t unified, they dealt heavy damage on all areas of the Roman Empire. The attacks came from all over, some of them took place on islands, others were fought by mainland. Looking at the attacks, the Barbarian Invasions were very successful in taking over the Roman Empires controlled areas(Doc.6). These Barbarian Invasions were just some of many reasons why the Roman Empire fell.
What caused the fall of the Western Roman Empire? The collapse of Rome was caused entirely by itself. With Rome's government inability to sustain its empire, Rome's army eroding, and terrible financial maintenance Rome led itself to complete and utter destruction. Rome’s government failure to sustain its empire led it to finally collapse. Henry Haskell an author of The New Deal in Old Rome writes “Part of the money... workmen from their occupations.”
When these invasions took place Rome didn't defend themselves properly and thats how these germanic warriors took over the outskirts of Rome. If they hadn't been so prideful and didnt forget about their
First up, the foreign invasions that capsized Rome. According to document D, it states what the weak and lazy roman army was up against. Extremely vicious warriors who slaughtered their enemies on horseback, with almost no weaknesses, who pillaged the roman empire until it was nothing but ruins. That was just one group of invaders. According to document C, there were 3 others that were also extremely difficult to fight. And even worse for Rome’s sake, they came from every direction! This is why Rome had no chance.
The Roman Empire was a vast territory that expanded to three different continents. They were a place of honor, tradition, and respect. Rome has had several different periods, some of peace, and some of violence or unrest, but those were solved quickly and effectively. However, such a magnificent empire could not hold up under the strains that were slowly causing it to collapse. Rome began to face many problems that together allowed the fall of the Roman Empire. The three main problems that caused Rome to fall were invasions by barbarians, an unstable government, and pure laziness and negligence.
Since its collapse, historians have attempted to explain the struggle for power and control over both the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire that followed. To explain the complexities of the Roman Republic, the Empire, and their political complexities can be a daunting task. For nearly ten centuries Rome would rule most of the known world before the fall of the Western Empire (Byzantine) in 476 C.E. Before that fall occurred, a fundamental change would take place that would transform the original Republic into the Roman Empire. Many factors would be directly and indirectly responsible for this transition. These would
