“The White Bicycle” Reaction The White Bicycle is about a teenage girl named Taylor Simon, a 19 year old with Asperger's syndrome (a type of Autism on the spectrum) who is trying to start her life and live independently of her mother. Taylor travels to southern France to care for a boy named Martin with cerebral palsy while she tries to figure out how to break free from her mother’s grab on her independence. She often spends her time riding her white bicycle in the french countryside thinking about where to go from this point in her life. This book is not only a great book about coming to age, but it’s a great book in general. I picked the book, “The White Bicycle” by Beverley Brenna because I read that it was a book about a girl with Aspergers.
I chose the book “Bully” by Patricia Polacco. It’s a story about a sixth grade girl who is a new student along with a boy she befriends. The main character gets the attention from a popular group and realizes that she doesn’t want befriends them because they are bullies. When she turns down being friends with them they bully her on social media. It goes to show that it’s hard to fit in at times but
The book I choose for my summer reading was, Blink Once by Cylin Busby. I choose this book because I read the first page and it kept my attention and I knew I needed to read the rest of the book. I did and it turned out to be a wonderful book with a nice twist.
There are many issues with varying amount of prevalence that need to be discussed in our world currently. Privilege is one of those issues. Jeremy Dowsett opens discussion on white privilege with his essay What My Bike Has Taught Me about White Privilege in which he speaks being a cyclist trying to navigate the road and stay safe. Jeremy Dowsett uses an extended analogy on the implications of living as a person of color in an infrastructure designed to benefit white people.
The article What My Bike Has Taught Me About White Privilege by J. Dowsett talks about how there is a white privilege in today’s world even if people want to deny it. He used the analogy of bike riders being the minorities and automobile drivers being white. Most automobile drives do not think about the bike riders, they are not men to them they just do not cross there mind and because of that they might mistreat. There are also the automobile drivers that go out of their way to be mean to the bike riders just because they are driving a car so they feel superior.
Kristina the main character travels to her father that she hasn't seen for most of her life. Before Kristina was a golden child, she got good grade, she made good choices, and she never even thought of drugs. After the trip at her father's she was opened to the idea of drugs, boys and reckless decisions. She wasn't Kristina anymore, she was Bree. This book shows readers how easy it is to get lost into drugs and reckless choices; and the struggle of becoming herself again.
Like the Reynolds X100, 7005 Aluminum is an aluminum alloy but consisting of Zinc and Magnesium. Due to its cost and inconvenience of heat treating, 7005 aluminum has gained considerable popularity with smaller companies.
I have chosen to read the book "The Quiet Room" by Lori Schiller. I truly appreciate books that allow me to see what it's like in the shoes of someone with a serious mental illness. This is based on a true story of Schiller's personal struggle with schizo-affective disorder. This book relates to my life because of how I deal with mentally ill patients in my work everyday. The story left me overwhelmed by the serious emotions and terrifying journey that this woman persevered. "The Quiet Room" is a testimony of how schizophrenia can affect a person, involving auditory hallucinations, delusions, and experimenting
I chose the book ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ from the Big Read Program. According to the Big Read’s webpage, the Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, Managed by Arts Midwest. This program established in order to restore reading to the American culture center. The Big Read program aims to support creative reading in specific communities. As literary reading started to decline among people, especially the young, the Big read aims to support American literary reading by giving the readers the opportunity to read and discuss their reading within their communities ("The Big Read," n.d.).
In the story “The Bicycle” by Jillian Horton the main character plays piano not because she wants but because she wants to make her aunt Tante Rose happy, but as she gets older she has a change in mind. In the film “Stand By Me” by Rob Reiner the boys have a change in themselves mentally and emotionally on their journey to the body.
I kept the pedal to the metal and the shifter at sixth gear as I scanned the freeway looking for a white paneled van that contained something that should have been put in the facility and guarded along with the other things. It wasn’t until now that they finally tracked it, and it was heading east on I-70. The engine of my Superbird roared as I accelerated, just like back in the good old days when Kay was driving it. It has seen many missions and had driven almost a hundred thousand miles in its existence and yet still ran like a champ.
In the story “The Bicycle”, written by Jillian Horton, the hero Hannah goes on an extremely defining journey. She is compelled to make decisions that will change her life forever. How do heroes like Hannah make these decisions? In this story, Hannah faces internal and external conflict, by being persuaded to confine herself from the outside world. Later in the story, Hannah realizes her options and gains control, which introduces the idea of freedom to the story. Although many factors contribute to the outcome of a hero's journey, the amount of freedom and confinement the hero is given will significantly change their outlook and the outcome of the story. Firstly, Hannah started playing piano from a very young age. Her whole life revolved
I chose Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson due to the content of emotion. It is a sarcastic, confusing and depressing book that lets one go through a journey with the main character, Melinda. I continued to read Speak because I wanted to educate myself on rape culture and how Melinda has been living with a huge secret that she has never told anyone. Throughout the book, Melinda has trouble with her classes, making friends, and finding herself due to what happened that summer night.
In most cases, when people hear the name South Carolina they instantly think Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular places in South Carolina. Why is Myrtle Beach so popular? Myrtle Beach is popular because of the history that brought it along, the amusement parks and entertainments, the best dining places and the special events that are hosted there.
My favorite book and the best book to read, is Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. Sharon Draper is an excellent author and such a terrific writer that she won the Coretta Scott King Award for Authors twice; in 1998 and also in 2007. She has also received other awards for her writing but, the one that directly impacted me was when her book Out of My Mind received the Sunshine State Young Readers award in 2011-2012. This award brings to attention the books that are considered to be great reads for my age group and it was this that brought the book to my attention when I was in the fourth grade. It was this book that helped me understand people with disabilities.
The book Don't You Dare this Mrs. Dunphrey by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I choose to read this book because I thought it might be a good short book to read fast and easy.
