In the slave narrative The History of Mary Prince, harsh treatment and brutal beatings from Prince's depraved slave mistresses occur almost regularly to Mary Prince and her slave companions. Prince narrates the whole story from her perspective and gives elaborate detail as to what a slave has to endure. Although all of Prince's owners are men, Prince focuses on the brutal beatings that the women pressed upon her. Mary Prince depicts the slave-master's wives as evil, twisted women who just beat Mary for no particular reason. Prince uses the advantage of showing these women as evil to gain the sympathy and compassion from her audience, an audience who would primarily be white, Christian women. Mr. I-'s wife was the first to deal with Prince. Prince describes her first encounter with the horrible slave mistress, stating, "Mrs. I----came and took off my hat, a little black silk hat Miss Pruden made for me" (4). The black hat is a symbol. The black hat is the only object that Prince had to remind her of the good times with her mother and Miss Betsey. When Mrs. I- removes the hat from her head, all of Mary's hopes sink as she realizes that the good times are over. The reoccurring presence of women is felt throughout the novel. "Although men are mentioned, they are largely absent from the picture" (Baumgartner 255). The focus on women is centered on their actions and appearances. Prince takes notice to the physical features of Mrs. I- describing her as "a stout tall woman with a very dark complexion, and her brows were always drawn together into a frown" (6). Prince gives a negative impression of this woman. Prince describes her as dark, which at the time is considered a burden. Mrs. I- seems to be lashing out at Prince and other slaves because she too is dark, and needs to make her authority felt. Mrs. I- makes sure that the slaves see her as their masters and not as one of them. Mrs. I- is an angry woman and has frowning eyebrows. The audience can sympathize with Prince and feel the bad vibes that Prince is feeling. Prince also reveals that Mrs. I- had a harsh voice and that Prince did not like to hear it.
