There are multiple types of conflict in The Crucible that forwards the plot, these types of conflict are in the play and most characters have some type of conflict with another person, the town, or themselves. The Crucible is a play that is absolutely filled to the brim with conflict and is set in the time period of the Salem Witch Trials that lasted from February 1692 up until May 1693. In the play, many people were deceived, accusations were thrown around town, and people were hung or burned at the stake. The first type of conflict is man v. man, and this is read multiple times throughout the play. The first time this occurs is with John Proctor and Abigail. The affair going on between these two is revealed in the first act when the two start to converse in the room, then Proctor tells her to forget that their relationship is actually happened while she wants to continue the relationship (Miller, Arthur. “Act One.” The Crucible: a Play in Four Acts, Penguin Books, 1999, pp. 21–24)Abigail and John Proctor eventually go to court (Act III) and this is where Abigail deceived the judges by shivering and says that her shivering occurs when she can sense or see spirits, which is completely false. Abigail wins in the court but John Proctor gains more integrity from it. This conflict causes a chain of other conflicts to occur later.
