In literary history, guilt plays a major role. The nature of and effects of guilt can be heavily weighted at times in both texts. In Macbeth we see plenty of guilt that mostly stems from the macbeth household and the audience then witnesses the true effects of guilt. In To kill a mockingbird the guilt stems from a very afraid Mayella who is a transparent character that the audience soon sees that she holds the weight of a very guilty conscience. In each of the text the audience follows where the guilt flows and see the true effects of what guilt can do. In Macbeth and To kill a mockingbird the pair of villains in both texts follow a parallel course of action in which they sacrifice the innocent for their own gain, and are not yet satisfied, are ultimately destroyed by their guilty actions.
In macbeth and to kill a mockingbird, the audience witnesses how the pairs of villains sacrifice the innocent for what they want. In macbeth there are three major events that happen. The death of King Duncan is one example where innocence was sacrificed. Lady Macbeth and macbeth plot to kill King Duncan to make Macbeth king instead. When macbeth is finally king, there is a so called “prophecy” that banquo is going to be the one to father a line of kings. So once again Macbeth puts himself in a situation where he sacrifices an innocent man, that also happens to be his best friend, to make sure he doesn't get involved in macbeth's “royal” life. Finally when macbeth learns that Macduff is a danger to him, he orders for Macduff’s family to be murdered. Macbeth sacrificed an innocent family so that he wouldn’t be harmed.
In to kill a mockingbird, Mayella Ewell and Bob Ewell sacrifice the innocence of a man to protect themselves and their reputation. Mayella tells a tale of a man named Tom Robinson doing a socially unacceptable action. Rape. The audience sees that mayella is afraid of her father when Atticus questions Bob about the incident. Instead of being honest and calm, she throws out whatever she thinks will defend her as well as insults. “ I got somethin’ to say an’ the I ain’t gonna say no more.
