Theme Of Heroism In Beowulf

Decent Essays

There is no one quite as honorable as heros, especially epic heros. In the epic poem of Beowulf the

readers see a strong sturdy man who is able to do things people normally wouldn’t do or can’t do.

Beowulf the big hero of the epic poem is a man beyond believe as stated before. In the poem the

readers can run into a big question of analyzing the battles, and the little question being how the

show development of beowulf’s heroism. Through the poem we see him fight monsters and

dragons. Through each fight there is a development in Beowulf as a hero, whether it be from

fighting some one as Grendel (an evil monster who torments the Danes for 12 years by killing

people, he is also said to be born from Cain (Line 21-22)). There’s also development in the battle

with Grendel’s mother, and even development in Beowulf’s last battle which is in a fight with a

dragon. What Beowulf develops in the first battle is a sense of power, and the growth of heroism.

In the second battle Beowulf develops a sense of battle, and sense of bravery. In the last battle the

readers see that he develops a sense of mortality especially when he is as old and sick during the

time.

The first battle is started with Grendel going to Herot, sneaking into the place then killing thirty

men. This goes on for thirty years until the king calls upon Beowulf, and asks him to get rid of

Grendel. When Beowulf talks to the king Beowulf says that he will not even use his weapons due
