Candy is an older man that works on the farm that George and Lennie goes to work at. Candy’s only companion is his dog. The dog was older and useless but he gave Candy a sense of peace, along with a friend. Carlson killed Candy’s dog because he believed he was stinky and was too useless for Candy to keep. Steinbeck stated “At last Candy said softly and hopelessly, ‘Awright -- take ‘im’ he did not look at the dog at all. He lay back on his bunk and crossed his arms behind his head and stared at the ceiling”(Steinbeck 47). This quote shows that there was no sympathy for others. Candy’s dog was his only friend on the farm. The fact that Carlson would so easily take the dog from Candy shows that there was not one bit of brotherhood back then at all. As the book continues, Candy is dealing with a whole new type of loneliness, and he looks to Lennie and George for a type of friendship. Candy stated “Maybe if I give you guys my money, you’ll let me hoe in the garden even after I ain’t no good at it” (Steinbeck 60). This shows that at this point in Candy’s life he knows he doesn’t have much use to the world but he may be able to help out George and Lennie, and help the achieve their ultimate goal. Candy is a constant remind to the men that loneliness can drive you to extreme

In this novella Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses the symbolism of Crooks, Candy and Curley’s Wife to contribute to the overall theme of loneliness
“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world” (Steinbeck 13). This is said by George Milton in the novella Of Mice and Men. Of Mice and Men takes place in California during the Great Depression. Loneliness reoccurs several times because people do not stay at a work place long enough to make friends and usually travel alone. Loneliness is the main theme of Of Mice and Men because many characters deal with being lonely in different ways. It affects people who are looked down on because of their gender, race, and ability.
“Language…has created the word ‘loneliness’ to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word ‘solitude’ to express the glory of being alone.” (Paul Tillich) This quote narrates the novel, “Of Mice and Men”, by John Steinbeck. In the first chapter, Steinbeck presents the idea of loneliness and men who work on ranches with no point in life. Steinbeck utilizes this setting to demonstrate these thoughts. The novel “Of Mice and Men”, demonstrates loneliness and isolation in the characters Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife.
Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted drive one’s mental health insane. Curley’s wife was lonely mentally and emotionally. It was caused by her lack of communication and association with other people. Curley’s wife inappropriate actions with the other characters and her untimely death in the novel are driven by her loneliness.
As the Great Depression creates a sense of isolation and loneliness, two men seem to have it all figured out as they find their way through the vast land of California. During this time, men are forced into isolation and loneliness as they travel to find work, but George and Lennie represent the need for companionship as they have their whole lives planned together. In his writing, John Steinbeck uses character mannerisms, symbolism, and social injustice to show loneliness and the need for companionship in the novel, Of Mice and Men.
as a ranch worker to describe how the working men at the ranch felt in
During the depression, many of the people lost their jobs and were looking for work which leads to the story of George and Lennie who are traveling to find a job. The job they take is in the town of Soledad, California at a local ranch, and on the ranch George and Lennie meet many new people including three very different people who all have one thing in common, loneliness. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, loneliness plays a major role and in the novel three very different characters display loneliness. Many instances of loneliness are shown through Curley’s wife, Candy, and the ranch’s stable buck, black man, Crooks.

Many people were not able to recover from those losses and were forced to enter a life of hard work just to survive. The book Of Mice and Men opens with the two main characters, Lennie and George, looking for a place to work and live in order to survive. They get a job on a ranch where they meet various people and other workers like themselves but do not get too close to anyone besides the old, ignored worker, Candy. They discover more about their lives and who they are as people by interacting with those around them, whether it is willingly
In his novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck exhibits a multitude of different themes, such as the impractical nature of the American dream, social standards, and powerlessness. Each of these themes affect all of the characters, whether they should or not. A character, such as a Curley, lives the American dream, does not suffer from social standards restricting him, or powerlessness, is depicted as an evil man, full of rage and contempt, yet he has everything he could ever desire. Curley, who uses his status as the boss’s son as a personal benefit, masks his small size with his mean-spirited nature, pugnacious tendencies, and his possessiveness towards his wife.
Loneliness isn’t really mentioned in the story other than Curley’s wife plainly stating it. It doesn’t seem like a major theme or even a theme at all. Although, if you look more in depth to the story and really understand what some of the characters are saying, you will notice loneliness everywhere. For Lennie, he was out casted due to his mental instability.
Candy had a dog in the beginning of the book, but it was shot because it, too, illustrates that the strong stay and weak go sooner or later. The dog was weak and of no use so Candy sadly agreed to let Carlson (a ranch hand) to shoot his dog. Candy’s dog was the only thing that kept him alive/happy and without it he desperately embedded himself in other people's ideas/action in order to fulfill his desire to be with them or to do something with them. I’ve never lost anyone close to me except like my cat goldfish, whom I was sad and mad for when it died. Candy is old and weak, no one can afford to spend time with or do anything with him because he is of no use. He is always excluded and ruled as not important, like when Carlson (another ranch hand with a gun) and a few others pretty much force Candy to allow them to shoot his dog. Candy’s voice is excluded and they all gang up on him. I've been in situations where even though I knew I was in the right, people were against me because I was younger. I was with my brother but no one would care to listen to my opinions and ideas when creating a game we were going to play. I was very angry and frustrated and it’s very sad to see how Candy is neglected and forced into loneliness. Imagine how you would feel. “Candy looked a long time at Slim to try to find some reversal. And Slim gave him none. At last
This passage comes shortly after George becomes fed up with Lennie’s irrational actions and wishes, making Lennie feel like he should leave him for his own better. But, George begins to emphasize the fact that one cannot be lonely. By the author, John Steinbeck, italicizing Lennie’s dialogue, it shows the importance that the statement has in the book. That statement foreshadows the strong bond that the two will carry as companions. This is even the theme of the story because the author repeatedly shows how loneliness has a negative impact on various characters.
