Throughout Hamlet, the playwright conveys meaning through many methods in the play. The playwright mainly uses theme, symbolism, and imagery to convey the meaning of different events throughout this play. A playwright can use many themes in a play to convey meaning throughout a play. The theme that is very relevant in the play is madness. Madness is the state of being mentally ill, and extremely foolish while exhibiting chaotic behavior. the character affected by madness in this play are Claudius when he kills his own brother for power, Hamlet is striving to avenge the death of his father, and Ophelia who father is killed by her lover. When Claudius murders his own brother, the King for power, he sets off a series of madness throughout the play. Murdering your own brother for power is a prime example of chaotic behavior. The guilt of his actions begins to eat at him and kill him on the inside, therefore causing him to repent his sins. Claudius the makes this worse by giving hamlet a hard time for mourning the death of his own father. Hamlet then begins to pretend that he has gone mad, eventually actually going insane and killing Polonius thinking it was his uncle. When he is asked about the location of the body, Hamlet responds in riddles,” What have you done, my lord, with the dead body?, Compounded it with dust, whereto ‘tis kin”.
