“To Build a Fire” begins with a man going on a Yukon trail. He gets to a layer of ice. He walks on the ice to test it, and then he falls through. He then tries to make a fire. It fails and he tries again, but stull fails. He attempts to run to the camp. He is not able to and dies. One theme from “To build a fire” is to listen to experienced people. The first way the theme is developed is the man doesn’t listen to the old timer at sulfur creek. In a paragraph in the beginning, he says the old timer told him not to ever go alone on a trail in below 50 degrees weather. It is dangerous to go alone. He says you should have a partner at least that way you would not be alone. He does not listen. The next way the theme is developed
Thomas Builds-the-Fire is character that has experiences many tragic outcomes in his life. For example, he explains that his parents both died when he was young. “My father, he died on Okinawa in World War II, died fighting for this country, which had tried to kill him for years. My mother, she died giving birth to me, died while I was still inside her. She pushed me out into the world with her last breath” (CITE). It is because of this tragedy, that he has the courage to overcome obstacles. For example, when Victor and Thomas were standing outside of the trailer that Victors dad passed away in, Victor told Thomas that he did not have to go inside, Thomas simply explained that he is going to need the help, “…. he held his breath and followed Victor into the trailer” (CITE). In this moment Thomas did not have to go into the

He doesn’t want to be
When the boys first set up the fire, they think that it will just be used for a smoke signal. Ralph, the leader of the group, has a very close connection with the fire. It gives him hope that they will someday
Fire, the symbol of warmth, destruction, and renewal, is a dominant image in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Guy Montag, the protagonist, lives in a grim, futuristic United States where people have given up books and knowledge in general for entertainment and instant gratification. The standard use of fire to warm and heat has been replaced to be used for destruction and entertainment. Montag’s job as a fireman clearly shows this, as he is required to burn books and houses. Montag’s understanding of fire and burning as destruction is completely reversed by the end of the book when he regards it as a symbol of warmth and renewal.
The fire symbolizes hope of rescue and getting back home. It is arguably the most important resource the boys have. As Ralph states in the beginning of the book,”If a ship comes near the island it may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.” Golding used this statement to emphasize the symbolism relating the fire to hope. Although as the book goes on, the boys lose sight of the real importance of the fire. The first sign of this is the hunters letting the fire go out. That in itself symbolises the boys becoming more savage. As the book carries on, however, the importance of the fire degrades quickly. Often Ralph will even forget why they need it. In the end, however, the fire is used against all the boys and causes complete chaos, showing how out of hand and careless the situation is. Ironically, the fire does grab the attention of rescue and with that they are compared to society. Golding makes a strong statement that without supervision and intelligence, humans are careless and overtime will slowly degrade into savagery and madness. He demonstrates this with the timeline he set
In literature, fire can be viewed as desire, greed, and arrogance. It can also be viewed as passion, warmth, and strength. In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, the civilians in the society desire more technology and forms of pleasure to erase the pain like tv shows such as The Family, and as the firemen burn the books to erase history they’re filled with greed to destroy and burn. Later in the novel, Bradbury also uses fire to symbolize acceptance and embracefulness as he meets a group of men like him and he also associates fire with Montag’s rebirth. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury uses two versions of the motif of fire to associate fire with nature and positivity versus technology, and negativity with destruction.
“It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed” (Bradbury 1). As a force of nature, fire demolishes objects uncontrollably once set free. Eating each individual object slowly, savouring the process of destruction. In Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, Montag is the liberator of fire, using it to burn books, to watch them catch aflame and flutter in the air until they turn into a pile of black ash. As a fireman, Montag relishes the feeling of burning books, however, when he meets Clarisse McClellan, his perspective on his life changes. Gradually, Montag starts to shed of his skin and meets Faber, a retired English professor who feeds him with poetry and books. Ultimately, he finds his true sanctuary with a group of intellectual hobos next to the bank of the river. As Montag begins his journey with fire, he perceives it as a force of destruction, however, as he progresses on his quest to attain a clearer version of himself, the fire acts as the ash of phoenix, allowing him to reborn.

This is shown in his first decision to murder the king and take his throne. But eventually, it catches up with him and he becomes paranoid and tries to kill the old king's sons. In the final moments of the play, Macbeth is killed and a new king rises, who is liked.

“To Build a Fire” by Jack London is a short story about a man traveling through the Alaskan Yukon to meet up with his friends for lunch. The author keeps the character nameless and refers to him only as “The Man” which is used to show a connection between humanity and nature. The story shows the hardships the man goes through to get to his destination through the Alaskan Yukon, yet unfortunately doesn’t make it. The conflict is a man versus nature theme which contrasts strong and direct relations of the hardships in nature. Throughout this analysis, I am going to explore the conflict between the man and the merciless nature he has to go through before his death.
Do you think you could survive the Yukon trail, a mile wide and three feet of ice, and just as many feet of snow, in weather colder than fifty below? The story “To Build a Fire” by Jack London, is about a man who tried to take the Yukon trail and get to his friends with just a dog to guide him. He was told that no one has ever made the journey alone, yet he chose to take on the journey. Through the story the man faces many conflicts not only through himself in having too much pride, but also with the physical ones such as the cold which lead to his death. The main theme in the book is the man’s perseverance to try and survive. The man on the Yukon Trail has to show perseverance through the story even with the harsh weather and signs of bad events coming upon him. In his story “To Build a Fire,” Jack London discusses the theme of perseverance through two literary elements, conflict and foreshadowing.
“Thoughts become perception, perception becomes reality. Alter your thoughts, alter your reality” (James “William James Quote”). This sentiment from William James who was a leading philosopher and psychologist at the turn of the 19th Century inspires one to challenge their labeling of a current circumstance, suggesting happiness is a perception that can be manipulated. This mind over matter approach to life’s struggles has become commonplace in the repertoire of motivational speakers, close friends, coaches, and other well-meaning influencers alike. This ambiguous concept has the ability to produce very real consequences, even death. In
