Mrs. Mallard, who is the protagonist, experienced different emotional transformation in a short story “The story of an hour” written by Kate Chopin. The story describes the protagonist variation of emotion and the epiphany moments developed after she was informed the death news of her husband. As a wife, her reaction gives the readers another kind of sentiment: she was so calm and indifferent that is out of the reader’s expectation. Moreover, she suffered from heart disease and was under control by her husband, which means she had no freedom, regardless of mental or physical. On the other side, Mrs. Mallard lived in 19th century, a period that women had to obey their husband and the entitlement of them was limited.

The protagonist was a female, also suffered in hysterical tendency, which is referring to the story. Her husband, John, who was a doctor, sent his wife to an old house for rest cure. In a reader’s perspective, it seemed like a proper way to treat his wife, however, unexpectedly, this can be a problem. It actually doesn’t shows care of her husband as he just leaves her alone in the house and parenting her like a child. The room does not suit her favor and the windows there remind her as a child and even a prisoner. The yellow wallpaper of the wall was the main reason that drove the protagonist mad eventually. When the protagonist required moving out due to the disturbance of the wallpaper, her husband just ignored her request as he thought that it was irrational. This shows his disrespectful of his wife’s feeling. The protagonist’s imagination starts when she is disallowed to do anything instead of staying still. She then found disturbed by the imagined woman figure in the wall. Referring to the story, it tells that the protagonist was struggling in the vortex by her imagination. She always thought that there was someone behind the wallpaper and was a threat to her. It could be affirmed according to “There are things in that paper that nobody knows but me, or ever will.
