Alexie Sherman’s The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian tells a very interesting story about a boy named Junior, who throughout the entire novel, is trying to gain the acceptance of those around him while telling a story about Native Americans as a whole. There is a very comical tone that is very consistent throughout the entire novel that makes it seem much more personal, and allows to reader to relate to junior and understand his situation. This coming of age story brings about many themes and main ideas that are related to Native Americans of past and present. Themes such as imprisonment, overall acceptance, poverty, education, stereotypes, and race. This novel is initially set on a Spokane Reservation located in Wellpinit Washington. The Spokane tribe used to span over three million acres of land along the Spokane river and retained a rich culture (“United States History”). The tribe was separated into three bands: The upper, middle, and lower Spokane, which are now joined in one single tribal group (“About Spokane Tribe”). It was not until 1881 that President Rutherford B. Hays allocated a smaller reservation of land for the tribe. Approximately 150,000 acres of land was given to the Spokane tribe, which is now where they reside, and is where the story begins (“United States History”).

Sherman Alexie was born on October 7, 1966, in Spokane, Washington. Being a registered member of the Spokane tribe through his mother, he attended grammar school on the Spokane reservation in Wellpinit, Washington. He was originally a basketball player but when he started taking an anthology of Indian poetry literature class, he realized more girls were paying attention to him, and he liked that. He said jokingly, “I should have been writing poems all along.” (pg. 9), just to be getting the attention of more girls. After taking creative writing classes in college, he began publishing magazines, such as The Beloit Poetry Journal, The Journal of Ethnic Studies, New York Quarterly, Ploughshares, and Zyzzyva. Alexie was also in Granta Magazine: Twenty Best American Novelists Under the Age of 40, New York Times Notable Book for Indian Killer, and People Magazine: Best of Pages. He also won the Lila Wallace-Reader 's Digest Writers ' Award in 1994. Nevertheless, Arnold has made such a good decision on leaving the rez since there were so many issues which he has to face with. Transferring to Reardon was a big transition for Junior. He was in school with a lot of other Indians, to just being the only indian in an all white school. Transferring impacted his life in many different ways. Because of how poor the reservation was Junior knew it was time to be different and take his life down another path. He included some of the deaths he had to cope with, including those of his sister and grandmother While most stories about Native Americans do not come from the perspective of a child, especially a male child, this story is unique. His tribal heritage greatly influenced his work. The authors own experiences shown through very clearly as he gave a very realistic tale of growing up on a reservation. He spoke very boldly about the issues of poverty, alcoholism, depression, and physical abuse within the reservation.
