Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence , the third president of the United States, and founder of the University of Virginia. As a public official, historian, philosopher, and plantation owner, he served his country for over five decades. (monticello.org) Jefferson is seen as a very honorable man by most people because of the positions he has taken and for all he has done for the nation. Even though Thomas Jefferson was one of the founding fathers of the Declaration of independence, he shouldn’t be glorified as a saint because he was an incestuous pedophile, a hypocrite, and a liar. (Coard) Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in the Shadwell plantation located outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. Thomas Jefferson was born into one of the most distinguished families of Virginia. (biography.com) His father Peter Jefferson was a successful planter and surveyor and his mother Jane Randolph a member of one of Virginia's most distinguished families. Having inherited a considerable landed estate from his father, Jefferson began building Monticello when he was twenty-six years old. Three years later, he married Martha Wayles Skelton, with whom he lived happily for ten years until her death. Their marriage produced six children, but only two survived to adulthood. Jefferson, who never remarried, maintained Monticello as his home throughout his life, always expanding and changing the house.
