There were many causes and events leading up to the French Revolution in 1789. Before the Revolution, France had been involved in many expensive wars, especially the American War of Independence, causing financial difficulties and debts which were increased through the expensive upkeep of the Royal Family and their courts. The Revolution led to the development of new political forces such as democracy and nationalism. It questioned the authority of kings, priests, nobles and eventually ridded itself of the monarchy in the nation. The Revolution also gave new meanings and new ideas to the political ideas of the people. The French Revolution of 1789 occurred due to government debt, class conflict, bankruptcy, the Enlightenment, and the rule of absolutism. These social, economic, and political conditions in France would ignite the start of the French Revolution (562). The Third Estate felt the need to eliminate the problems that was altering their growth in society in order to achieve political, economic, and social equality (564-566). The government at the time had serious financial problem that resulted in great taxations. The French spent too much money on wars, and too much money to keep up with their lavish lifestyles. Moreover, the economic depression at the time led to a recession in the areas of agriculture, trade, and manufacturing. As a result to of all these problems, the King became unable to re-establish control (564-565), (567), (569), (572).

The Nobility had long been discouraged by their loss of rights. They worked hard at getting themselves in positions of power that surrounded the monarchy. The special concern of the nobles was to see that the King did not introduce tax reform. They wanted more political power to make sure events like this did not happen. While they denounced the monarchy’s absolutism they wanted to set up their own form of it.

It was because of the absolute power of the monarchy that led to large gaps in wealth between socioeconomic classes, an irresponsible aristocracy, and the oppression of citizens throughout the empire. Once these factors became more evident in France, more difficulties began to sprout. The French Revolution was the border of social and political turmoil that led to reformers in the French government enforcing the removal of the power of the King and wealthy landowners to develop a government that would serve the citizens equally that would not be determined on their social class. Lastly, the revolution opened the doors to the development of a new political system such as democracy and nationalism.

Many factors went into the starting the French Revolution. One of the main contributing factors was the lack of a fair hierarchy in the French society. There were 3 main classes and only 3% of people were inside of the top 2. This created a problem as the first 2 had twice the representation that the third did in the government. The first Estate was made up of the clergy from the Roman Catholic Church. They also owned almost 10% of the land inside of France. The Second Estate was the rich nobles. They owned almost 20% of the land. Both of the classes paid almost no taxes and shot down almost any ideas of the Enlightenment. The Third Estate

During the 1700s in France if you were born into the First and Second Estate it meant you were going to grow up in a carefree luxurious life. Being born into the first two Estates meant never having to lift a finger. Food and land was abundant. Entertainment and being invited to the most exclusive events was very important. Attending dressed in the trendiest most expensive fashion style was a must. But, for those born into the Third Estate it meant poverty and misery. Land and food was scarce. Even though you worked till you dropped; you still went to bed hungry and cold. food and clothing were a luxury. The people of the Third Estate began to resent the other two Estates. In conclusion the king's leading up to the Revolution were addicted to war, until they wanted an ally that cost them a lot of money they couldn’t afford which made people angry because they weren’t making the right choices for them and there was nothing the peasants could do because they had no political power which is ridiculous because they were 97 percent of the
