The quote, “ the only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” was said by our 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt. The famous quote was stated during President Roosevelt’s first inaugural address. In this situation Roosevelt had recently been appointed President. He was using this quote as an opening sentence to address all the problems happening in the United States during the time period, such as the Great Depression. Given what I have learned about the quote, I would estimate that the year it was in the novel would be around 1933, I would estimate this because To Kill a Mockingbird took place in the Great Depression, and The Great Depression was at its depth in 1933.
2.) When I first started reading the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee, I thought it was about two siblings and their journey growing up. Now that I look deeper into the texts I realize that it is actually about the importance of never harming anyone or anything that never hurt you. For example, on page 119, Miss Maudie says, “ Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people's gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.” This quote clearly connects back to the theme. The words of Mrs. Maudie makes the readers realize that if mockingbirds have never done anything bad to us why would we harm them.
