Society is very judgmental, simply because things that aren’t considered as “normal”, are not accepted. Bullying is one of society’s biggest problems, because if someone is different, they apparently aren’t deserving of equal treatment. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, the author portrays the message that we should accept others no matter how different they are to us in order to avoid conflict. Jem and Scout accept Calpurnia despite his skin color when the rest of the county doesn’t. Atticus accepts Ms. Dubose although she speaks badly upon him. Finally, Scout accepts Boo Radley even if there are many rumors being spread about him.
The Finches were accepting Calpurnia as family, avoiding racists conflicts that were happening during this time period. Scout saw Calpurnia as the mother she never really had. Calpurnia does the house work a mother does, and she takes care of the children as if they were her own. “It was not often that she made crackling bread, she said she never had time, but with both of us at school today had been an easy one for her. She knew i love crackling bread. ‘I missed you today,’ she said. ‘The house got so lonesome ‘long about two o’clock I had to turn on the radio”... Calpurnia bent down and kissed me” (Lee 32). Once Scout left home for school, Calpurnia realized how much she loved Scout as she missed her presence. And Scout loved her back, even if, at the time, they weren’t on the same status due to skin color. To
