Chapter 1 begins as a flashback told by the main character and narrator, a young girl named Scout. This retelling of the story continues through the entire book. the author of this novel, Harper Lee, characterizes scout the narrator as an intelligent tomboy who is not so sure she wants to deal with the Radleys. Scout always hung around her older brother Jem and Dill, a boy who visited Maycomb every summer. She was always up for whatever they did and really did not like it when they called her girly. Dill became fascinated with the Radleys and their mysteriously hidden son Boo. Scout urged Dill to let the Radleys keep to themselves, but her harassing of Dill did nothing. Towards the end of the novel, Scout gets saved by a man, who turns out to be Boo (Arthur) Radley. After everybody finds out Jem is okay, Scout asks Mr. Radley if she could walk him home. “He coughed his dreadful railing cough, and was so shaken he had to sit down.” (371) Since the events of the night were very scary, that made for a very frightened Arthur.
This is when Jem starts to feel empathy for Boo. Scout is even more afraid of Boo after she knows that he had watched them flee the property. When Boo gave them the soap dolls and put them in a knot hole in a tree, Scout still considered “…everything on the Radley place was poisoned… (81)”. But it all “[had] slipped through Jem’s memory (81)” as he went to go get the dolls. They also decide to write a letter to whoever was sending them those gifts. They still denied that it was Boo though, but deep down, they knew that it was Boo who had given the gifts to them. When the knot-hole they had been receiving the gifts from was filled up, Jem started to cry without Scout knowing why, showing that he is starting to realize Boo is a person but Scout still thinks that Boo is an evil man. When a fire sweeps through Maycomb, Boo gave Scout a blanket without her seeing, and her “stomach turned to water and [she] nearly threw up… (96)” because she continues to believe he is a monster. Jem has already learned the lesson of empathy from Boo while Scout still struggles with this concept at this point in the story.
However, when Boo saved Jem, Scout proves her courage, as well as how much she has matured, but grabbing ahold of Boo’s hand and walking him home. With some help from Atticus and Miss Dubose, Scout was able to show her new found
