“At this time not a soul in sleeping Holcomb heard them - four gunshot blasts that, all told, ended six human lives...” (Capote 5). This quote is significant to the novel because it provides A chilling atmosphere for the book. This quote utilizes the simple nature of the victimized town, as well as to prepare the readers for the big event to come. It was a terrible picture that then shattered to suggest a lasting consequence of the crime on the community. When Dick and Perry decided to kill innocent people in cold blood it marked the beginning of evil in the novel. Holcomb was a quiet town everyone left their doors open and didn't have to worry about crime. The killing put everyone on edge some people even looked at each other as strangers
“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” (Lee, 76). As seen in To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel about growing up and the reality of life, there are various events that influence one’s morality, behavior, and perspective towards life. From the innocence of a child to the maturity of an adult, growing up is a phase that generally everyone experiences throughout their lifetime. The quote above is said by Atticus Finch towards his feisty daughter Scout (who is in fact the narrator of the actual novel); personally, I can pertain greatly to what Atticus said, for I had to learn to depend not on my own strength but on the LORD’s to fight and win my battles, whether spiritual, emotional, physical, or mental. However, this change in attitude did not occur in an instant, but was the result of years of struggles and perseverance, from my childhood to my adolescence; it was initiated with my parents’ announcement of our move from our home in Palmetto, Georgia across the United States to Dinuba, California.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a novel that explores the theme of courage throughout key events and through character. The novel is narrated by Jen-Louise Finch over a two year period revolving mainly around the trial of Tom Robinson.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus is the “mockingbird” of the story in that he is “killed” when other people are against his harmless “singing”. This is so because he innocently read with Scout at night against Miss Caroline’s will, he clearly had the upper side of evidence in the Tom Robinson trial yet still lost, and he persisted Aunt Alexandra’s blatant request of firing Calpurnia in order for her to be the housekeeper. All three of these reasons help to prove that he indeed took on such a role in the plot.
Power, it is something that everyone wants, it classifies us. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is about a powerless black man, Tom Robinson, accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Because of Mayella’s class and gender she is powerless, but her race makes her have a little more power.
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” (Lee 149).
Do you know what it feels like to be powerless? A white nineteen year old woman named Mayella Ewell Falsely accuses a black man of raping her in Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930’s, and is rendered powerless, due to being recessive in her social class, race, and gender. She does so in hopes of escaping her abusive father, and a chance to have a better life. Although Mayella is white, she has been shunned by African Americans and other white people. Mayella is a very young woman that does not own anything nice, nor clean, besides geranium flowers. During the 1930’s, men were the dominant sex, as a female, Mayella has to obey her father, Bob Ewell. As a result, Mayella was mistreated and abused.
Hatred has been around for many years in the hearts of man. For example, even Cane and Able had hatred against each other. But hatred had spread to other people for several reasons, for jealousy, racism and even for being different. Harper Lee expressed much hatred in To Kill a Mockingbird. The era of the 1930’s in the Deep South was where the novel took place. Maycomb County, Alabama was a place of white supremacy. Scout witnessed the problems of racism and hatred of the Maycomb people. In To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee uses Scout’s perspective and Atticus’s experience to express the true hatred and discrimination in a racist community.
Power is too overpowering sometimes especially for class, gender, and race. TKAM is a book written by Harper Lee in 1960. Mayella Ewell is a white, 19-year-old woman, who accused Tom Robinson, who is Negro, for rape. The book takes place in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s in the South during the Great Depression where there was a recession. Mayella is not a powerful character based on her class, gender, and race compared to Tom Robinson.
The book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee is about Scout Finch and her older brother Jem living in Maycomb, Alabama during the great depression. Scout and Jem spend a lot of their time watching over Boo Radley's house with Dill, their friend. Scout and Jem's Dad, Atticus, agrees to help a black man, Tom Robinson, by being his attorney where Tom is accused of Rape. The theme, Do not judge a person before actually getting to know them, is show in many different ways.
Michael Crichton defines prejudice as “opinion in the absence of evidence”. This theme is embodied in Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird and brims throughout the course of the story. Harper Lee exemplifies prejudice by using the juxtaposition of the unbiased man, Atticus Finch and his disparaging sister, Alexandra. Atticus’s quote “you never really understand a person until you consider things from from his point of view-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” relates to the quote by Michael Crichton because they both illustrate the theme that you cannot judge a book by its cover.(30)
Lee and Conolly shows the audience that courage tend to come in diverge forms. One form is physical courage. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus demonstrates courage in a physical sense as he finds himself in a face off with a loose rabid dog, only armed with a shotgun. " For God's sake, Mr. Finch, look where he is! Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley house!
A word in the beginning that was new to my vocabulary is ‘assuaged.’ Assuaged means to get rid of something. The first quote that reminded me of someone personal in my life is on page 1. On page 1, it says,”We were far too old to settle an argument with a fist-fight, so we consulted Atticus.” This reminds me of my little brother and me. In chapter one, the only relative introduced was his brother, John Hale Finch. Another character that was introduced in this chapter is Calpurnia. Calpurnia is the Finch’s cook. Another character that was introduced in chapter one is Dill. Dill is a friend that visits every summer. In chapter one, page 8, it says,”Dill was curious.” I can relate to this quote because I am a very curious person. This reminds
English Language Arts: Mrs.Pyne Introduction What is courage? Courage is standing up,being brave, and doing what's right. We saw examples from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. According to Atticus,Mrs.Dubose, and Boo Radley in the book.
Aunt Alexandra’s way of policing who Scout may play with is unjust because her judgement of character is ruled by the reputation that person’s background holds, rather than the actual trustworthiness of the individual. My parents are more lenient, and generally allow me to associate with whoever I please, as long as they are not considered a bad influence. At the most extreme lengths, my parents will interrogate the parents of my friends by phone to see if they have a good reputation, but that is the farthest they will take. My parents are amicable enough to trust me to make friends with likable and responsible people. If I were to enforce the type of people my kids were to hang out with, I would try to get them involved with others who were
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, a moral citizen is someone who is like everyone else by having the same beliefs, actions, and think and talk like them. The townspeople believe that anyone who is not like them are a sin. They think that all of the town has to be the same and be “normal”. Normal to them means, everybody stays within their gender-roles and stay within their economic class.
