Tracy Chevalier's Girl With a Pearl Earring, is the story of a girl, named Griet, who begins work as a maid for Vermeer, a painter. The first on her own Griet learns about life and making her own decisions growing up in this world. During this time, she develops a relationship with Vermeer thru his art. Chevalier’s intent throughout this book was about coming into adulthood having to make your own decisions. He also used the book to show the discrimination against social classes and gender.
