The reason of this is could the trail of tiers be prevented by the u.s or the natives. The first reason that show that the U.S or the Native could prevented the Trail of Tears was in August, 1803 it was 35 year before the removal of the Cherokee Indian. It was a letter that president Thomas Jefferson wrote to a lawyer about the Louisiana perches 1803. when he got Louisiana from the French. Then he was thinking what to do with he Louisiana" The best use we can make of the country for sometime, will be to give establishments in it to the Indians on the east side of the Mississippi In exchange to their country"(Thomas Jefferson letter to John Berectmridgel August …show more content…

Then the other reason in that the u.s gave the native two years to move but the didn't move because the had hop. the way the could stop the is that they could in the summer time so they could died from the cold weather in the 1835. many of the native would be alive if they had move in a good
Another cause for poor relations between Native Americans and European Settlers was the constant push for acquiring new land by the Colonists. The Native Americans did not just want to give up their land and this resulted in war between the Indians and the Colonists. During this time Native Americans were sold into slavery belittled and removed from their land, due to the fact that the Colonists had more advanced technology and weapons. One of the major wars was the French and Indian War which resulted in the removal of Native Americans from their land and many casualties on both sides. Over time many battles were fought over land, even after America was an established country with presidents, laws, and court systems. Native Americans were continually pushed out of their land for hundreds of years while they were forced to move west. The constant push of Native Americans out of their land would cause an event known as the Trail of Tears where thousands of Indians were removed from their land by the Indian Removal Act. “In 1830 the Congress of the United States passed the "Indian Removal Act." Although many Americans were against the act, most notably Tennessee Congressman Davy Crockett, it passed anyway. President Jackson quickly signed the bill into law. The Cherokees attempted to fight removal legally by challenging the removal laws in the Supreme Court and by establishing an
What made the Cherokee culture distinctive towards others in the Trail of Tears time period was that they had a more peaceful, harmless outlook on the situation. In 1814, Andrew Jackson who would eventually become the President of the United States, had his and his whole army’s lives on the line in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend to the British forces when the Cherokee allied with them to win the battle. Surprisingly, 16 years later when Jackson was President of the United States, he made the deciding decision on the controversy of whether or not the Cherokee deserved their land. Jackson completed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, sending the Cherokee out of their own land which they
The Trail of Tears played a part in what is known as the Manifest Destiny, which was the expansion of the colonists to the west and also was a significant cause of the Civil War. The Trail of Tears elevated tensions between American settlers and the Native Americans. Native Americans lost trust in the American government because the government allowed settlers and soldiers to force and physically remove them from their ancestral lands and homes. By eliminating the Indians from their lands, the Manifest Destiny became well on its way to being fulfilled and bring settlers to new lands and riches. This was one cause of the Civil War as it caused tension between people the colonists America and between the Native Americans. Gold was found on the
The Trail of Tears began when white settlers found themselves in favor of the land that belonged to a plethora of Native American tribes such as the Choctaw, Chicasaw, Seminole, and the Cherokee. The United States had been expanding, and was working towards expanding into the southern land. According to the white settlers who were after this land the Indians “were standing in the way of progress”(“Indian Removal” para. 1). The white settlers were after large, vast, and fertile stretches of land and did not care as to whether or not the land was already inhabited.
IT was a direct result of the Indian Removal Act, which gave the US the power to move the Native Americans for the “greater good”. One of the tribes that ended up being killed in large numbers throughout the Trail of Tears was the Cherokee. Before being moved along four different paths, the Cherokee were placed in internment camps. The first group made the journey by boat on the Tennessee, Ohio, Mississippi, and Arkansas rivers but because the summer was hot and dry, the rivers were low and many of the Cherokee died from disease and exposure. Because of this, the other groups petitioned to the government to travel among routes on land. Most of these routes seem indirect, a result of the need to go around mountains, follow existing roads, and pass though cities for supplies, and some of the routes reached a distance of about 1,000 miles. Because the Cherokee had to walk almost the entire time and the estimated two month trip ended up taking four, many died along the way from exposure, starvation, disease, starvation, and dehydration. Most estimate the death toll to be about 4,000 but if you count all the deaths during internment and shortly after arrival the death toll rises to about 8,000 (Lineback). Because of this high death toll and because of the humanitarian cost, this “resolution” made by
Many native Americans will not use or accept twenty dollar bills. Why, you may ask, that’s because it has the face of President Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson was responsible for one of the most dishonorable events of American History, the Trails of Tears . From the beginning government has been mistreating the Indians, President Andrew Jackson especially hated the Indians and passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830. When they were asked to move they weren't given an option.
The entire treaty that was signed with the Utes had land and protection signed in the treaty and they signed to amend by the United States. It had involved 7 bands of Utes. It had many rules to follow by and they all agreed, at some point the government would eventually want the land that they had signed over and would need it back to slowly expand the United States. With the government taking land forcefully, it ultimately leads to The Trail of Tears. That involved the Indian removal policy, the Cherokee were the group that was removed by Andrew Jackson. The natives were forced to give up their land in Mississippi and were made to live in present-day Oklahoma and the travel was devastating. With over 4,000 dying when 15,000 had traveled, it was a devastating loss for the Indians after what they had to go
The Trail of Tears was a devastating forced march of 800 miles of the Cherokee Nation. Andrew Jackson strongly believed that the removal of Indians from the east would benefit the nation and the Cherokees. In reality, only the United States benefited from the removal and many Cherokees suffered and died and, in the end, did not get what they were promised. Even then the Cherokees remained strong, kept their beliefs, and continued to
The Trail of Tears is a very significant part of American history, whether you think it is right or wrong, it was a huge impact on the United States America. This movement particularly involves the Cherokee Indians. The Cherokee were removed forcefully, but also violently from their cherished lands. This obviously had a tremendous effect on the Cherokee and would change their entire culture forever. Everything for this great country of the United States of American came at the expense of a lot of innocent people and the Trail of Tears is a fine example of that.
The Trail of Tears technically happened from 1838 through 1839, but the issue actually began in the early 1830’s. The reasons behind the Trail of Tear is depressing. The Native Americans were constantly mistreated, they got pushed off land that each tribe has lived in for generations, almost every president had an issue with the Native Americans, the aftermath of the Trial of Tears was devastating. Native Americans in the East Coast in the 1830’s were slowly thrown out of their own land that they had lived on for generations. There were many reasons for taking the Native Americans land.
The problem with the Natives is that they blocked westward movement for Americans, who were mainly motivated by money. To appease the white settlers frustration, Jackson prompted Congress to pass the Removal Act of 1830. The Removal Act caused the forced removal of Indians from the land they inhabited in the Southeast, to land which would be granted west of the Mississippi River(7). At this time, President Jackson was responsible for negotiating, and creating removal treaties with the Native tribes, even if it meant having to be threatening at times. Robert Whaples states, “About seventy treaties were signed by which more than 100 million acres of Indian land were added to the public domain at a cost to the government of about $65 million plus 32 million acres in the new Indian Territory”, which shows just how crucial the Removal Act was towards the growth of the nation. Jackson’s aggressive political strategies seemed to had muzzled the Indians, who had been a burden for white settlers in one way or another since Columbus stepped on the
When Andrew Jackson was leading the native Americans to their new home. The native Americans didn’t want to move to their new home because they had memories left behind and because they have been living there for a long time that they didn’t want to leave there scorcher behind. When Andrew Jackson was helping them move he was doing it for good not bad. If the natives Americans didn’t leave the would have to obey the laws and they don’t want that.
One of the main tribes in the trail of tears was the Cherokee tribe. The Cherokees are a Native American tribe indigenous to the southern United States. The Cherokee felt betrayed for what the government did to them. During the 1800's, the US government created an "Indian Territory" in Oklahoma and sent all the eastern Native American tribes to live there. Some tribes willingly agreed to this plan. Other tribes didn't want to go, and the American army forced them. From all of this that happened the U.S government stole 25,000,000 acres of land from the Native
On the way, approximately 1/3 of the Cherokee people died. This event, known to the Cherokee as “the Trail where they cried,” is better known as we know, the ‘Trail of Tears,’ in the U.S. History books. This relocation of the Native Americans along the route from Georgia to Oklahoma which The United States Government forced tribes to migrate to reservations west of the Mississippi River in the 1820’s, 1830’s ,and 1840’s.’ (Foner, Give Me Liberty! 3-11) When the first settlers arrived in the new world, they wanted land to expand in the name of freedom, religious freedom, wealth, and power. The thing standing in the way of these desired treasures was the Indians themselves. Realize also, it would be the strongest European nations that wanted the ambitious expansion of America. Others, like the Dutch came to North America to trade, not conquer. So, the Europeans think! Anyway with the different nations that could vie for land themselves; I’m sure this must have speed up the Indian Removal Act. “Two important tribes have accepted the provision made for their removal at the last session of Congress, and it is believed that their example will induce the remaining tribes also to seek the same obvious
The Trail of Tears was an awful time for Native Americans that they will never forget. Greedly, the white men wanted land that Native Americans had lived on, farmed on, and raised their families on . Inevitably, glittering, glamourous, gold was found in the land. Additionally, the land was very fertile, which meant people could create huge cotton plantations and prosper. In 1830, the U.S. President Andrew Jackson, signed the Indian Removel Act, which made some land in the Louisiana Territory, what is currently Oklahoma, Indian Territory. But the Native Americans did not want to move. So the U.S sent hostile troops to force them out of their homeland. The most brutal evacuation was the Cherokees in 1838. At least 15,000 Native
