Training Camp
Training Camp is a fictional book authored by Jon Gordon who has written many other stories that are teaching and expiring athletes of all levels. Each one of Gordon's books has a phrase that is the focus throughout the adventures of the characters. “What the best do better than everyone else” is the theme of Training Camp. As readers progress through the book, they learn about becoming the best alongside the story's main character, Martin. As Martin attempts to make a professional football team, he learns many lessons, but the four that have most impacted me are; the best know what they truly want, the lesson learned through the fishing trip, the lesson from the bad day, and the best are mentally strong.

One of the major problems George and Jack encountered had a positive and negative impact on both of them. Firstly, as George and Jack were playing make-believe war, they encountered a highly restricted camp in which they got caught. They were escorted home and asked never to return. As they experienced intense curiosity, they returned and discovered military activities that occurred in the camp.
What is athletic training? Athletic training is the concern of the well being of the athlete and generally assumes the responsibility for overseeing the total health care for the athlete. This basically states that an athletic trainer's job is to be there for the athlete whether he/she is injured or not, and to practice the prevention of injury. By learning the proper techniques and steps to stretching, an athletic trainer can pass that information onto the athlete to help prevent common problems such as cramping. Another way of looking at an athletic trainer is that they must be prepared and capable of dealing with any type of trauma or catastrophic injury that may occur. If that wasn't enough, the NATA website offers this

The goal that is set is to win the state championship and nothing, including injury will change that goal. This occurs when Boobie Miles, the star running back, chooses to play in spite of a torn ALC, rather than yielding to the unimaginable pain that he is in. The team imposed a structure, which establishes the goals and values of the team, therefore reinforcing the team’s solidarity to winning the championship not only for them but for the town.

Starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, the 2001 film Training Day focuses on the portrayal of two Los Angeles Police Department officers. The story begins with Ethan Hawke as Jake Hoyt, a rookie narcotics detective on his first day of assignment. Jake is in a 24 hour period of field evaluation under the reins of a fellow respected and decorated narcotics officer Alonzo Harris, who is portrayed by Denzel Washington. Jake Hoyt is the ideal “white knight of justice”, an individual who is morally incorruptible, and a person who seeks to defend what is morally correct and to eliminate injustice through proper practices set under federal and state laws and standards. On the other side is Alonzo Harris, a ruthless, selfish, and corrupt narcotics cop who will do whatever it takes to complete the task, whether it violates the procedures and policies. Through the entirety of the film, the concepts of moral ambiguity in situational ethics towards institutional justice and the ethical dilemma of power and corruption amongst enforcement agencies are throughly stressed, analyzed, and reflected. The film illustrates and advances the implicit message of the misrepresentation of the criminal justice system, deception of the effectiveness of institutional justice, and corruption of crime enforcement agencies through the observation, analysis, and deconstruction of numerous examples in normalization to ideologies, and formal elements as suggested through the duration of the film.
Tim Green, the author of “Football Hero,” has had a life full of playing the sport he loved, football. Because of a great high school career, he was able to play as defensive line at Syracuse University. With this in mind, he was able to put the lessons learned while playing a sport into his books. With his experience, in books he gives interesting background about the game and what it takes to be a “football hero”.
For a lot of kids, it’s not until it’s all said and done, and they look back on it several years later, that they realize the difference the sport made in their lives. They are proud of playing the game. Have you ever met anybody who accomplished playing four years of high school football, and at the end of that run said, ‘Man, I wish I wouldn’t have played’? It doesn’t get said. Football players aren’t perfect. Nobody is. But millions of former players, one by one, can recount the life-altering principles they learned from football. They know the value of football is the values in football. That’s why high school football – and particularly high school coaches – play such a vital role in our society. Our football coaches are on the front lines of the battle for the hearts and minds of the boys in our society.
The novel begins with preseason football in the heat of a Texas summer. The players and coaches practice over 4 hours a day in 100-degree weather. The media is affecting every player pushing for a state championship and college scouts at every practice. The boys who gave completely of themselves for their sport are unique personalities. From dedicated quarterback Mike Winchell to Harvard-bound Brian Chavez to the inscrutable Ivory Christian, the team was full of young men who were singular human beings, each one bringing something special and indefinable to their group. And that's just scratching the very surface. The book recounts the tragic story of Boobie Miles, team’s star running back who had been highly recruited by all of the major programs. He is expected to attend and earn a scholarship to a large state college. The community
This can be seen all through the practices, competition trials, and Olympic races in which George Pocock’s words ring true every time. It is during the final Olympic race in which the boys realized, “that they needed to do what was impossible, to go even higher. Somewhere, deep down inside, each of the grades at shreds of will and strength they did not know they possessed,” (Brown, 350). Giving the reader a look at how these men have to put aside everything and focus on pushing themselves through the hardest race of their lives, shows the hopes and dreams that they all share to gain what others thought might be
While working hard is an important factor in being successful in every sport, it is especially prudent in football. The hype behind the sport causes athletes and communities to love the sport. No other sport has a week like homecoming, football players are put on a pedestal and academics are essentially put on hold due to the lack of focus. The entire week focuses on Friday night’s game. This hype draws the biggest and best athletes to want to be a part of the fun—to be on that pedestal. This in turn makes the competition within the sport better. Being on the team isn’t enough though, as my head coach used to say, “Homecoming is fun, but it’s worth nothing if you lose Friday night.” Knowing the entire week is dedicated to one game causes the team to work harder than the athletes in other sports. The standard expected by the coaches carries over to the classroom and into the athlete’s lives outside of high school. Kevin Kniffin, a behavioral scientist as Cornell University, studies and teaches about the leadership skills and character traits of athletes from
Walter Camp founded American football in 1869. He is known as the “Father of American Football." Camp developed rule changes that cast the foundation of modern American Football. The sport started to rise and many people wanted to play or watch football. Steroids and concussions where main problems that are associated with football. Anabolic Steroids retain protein like the hormone testosterone to help build muscle. For football players, steroids are tempting because of the fast results in gaining weight and muscle in short amounts of time.
Specifically, the author states in the introductory chapter that the Canadian hockey team had “to look beyond the individual” (Gladwell 10). This occasion for which the author chose to write on this topic was to demonstrate success, which we can define as all that any person attempts to achieve Regardless of the specific situation. This is a concept widely understood and experienced daily. Therefore, Gladwell captures the topic of success by telling an inspiring story in this chapter.
Sports are a significant part of society and spectators enjoy particular events regardless of the type. However, there are many players who develop special working and social relationships with whom they are participating regardless of the type of sport. The relationship and how people interact with one another can be the determination of how successful a team can be. The particular film based on a true story that I chose is titled When the Game Stands Tall. This film consists of a high performing football team of De La Salle High School in the state of California. Jim Caviezel portrays the head coach (Bob Ladouceur) as a man with such vision and passion that goes beyond the fundamental principles of coaching the game of football. The football team had won 151 games without being defeated which is the highest winning record a team has had in the game of football. The film shows the internal struggles of the players in their lives as people, and how they perform on the field. It also shows the external tragic difficulties that they face while they attend and play for De Le Salle High School. In the movie, the head coach helps the students/players by not only coaching them but also showing them how to live a flourishing life by committing to endure difficult life situations and the way to overcome them. He helps teach the principles of brotherhood and companionship with the team that they build. In the movie, the head coach and the staff had taught the players
What makes champions in sport? At the end of the day, it is the moment when one stands at the top of the podium, holding up their well-deserved medals and trophies that all elite athletes strive for. Thus, experts have studied this question extensively to see which programs, or by what means, are elite athletes developed to achieve this goal. One of the many aspects to athlete development is the controversial topic of deliberate practice versus deliberate play. Deliberate practice can be defined as “any training activity (a) undertaken with the specific purpose of increasing performance, (b) requiring cognitive and/or physical effort, and (c) relevant to promoting positive skill development” (Cote et al., 2007, p. 185) On the
