Today in America there has been a growing problem amongst people and the police force. There has been many cases over the past couple of years were the police has used brute force on citizens. The main group of people suffering from police brutality is young African Americans. The young blacks feel that they are being targeted by the police. These cases continue to happen with no signs of stopping anytime soon. The police have been using brute force on black Americans for years now. There was a major that spark awareness on police brutality a couple of years ago. This case was the Trayvon Martin case that stated the whole black lives matter movement. This case was one of the key features to start the black lives matter movement. In this case
The brutality of the police force has been a long worldwide problem, but especially between the years of 2012-2016. Black people are being unjustly beaten and shot in plain sight for doing nothing while being unarmed. Journal of African American Studies “Blacks are viewed as deserving of harsh treatment in the criminal justice system” (482). “Black males with more “Afrocentric” features may receive longer sentences than blacks with less Afrocentric features like lighter skin and straighter hair”(482). Nowadays it is important to know about the police force. It’s important to know our rights as citizens and be careful around cops. Not everybody is good, but not everybody is bad also. In The New York Amsterdam News 21 people were killed by Chicago police in 2008. Entire families were being attacked. They believe it’s because of their skin color and how they are different. The year of racism started off with the world seeing the police murder of Oscar Grant. “The media have pushed people away from hearing the issue of police brutality, and it has fallen off of the radar screen.”(2) “You can’t give in. They will try to make an example out of you, try to break your spirit!”(2) African Americans say do not trust the cops with anything. “They will ruin you.”(2)
There is a major issue with police brutality within the confinements of the United States of America, within society in general. The problem of police brutality is not just a problem with African American, it is spread throughout all the races. “Mr. Castellani who is 20 years old, yelling and pointing at officers, who are posted down the street, after his ejection from an Atlantic City casino for being underage. Four officers rush him, take him down and begin beating him -- a fifth officer soon joins in.”(The Baltimore,Leonard Pitts Jr.). It just so happened that this man was black and had been brutally attacked by police because he said something they didn't like it. It isn't always African Americans that are attacked thought, in 2014 Donovan Duran, a Colorado MMA fighter, was beat and dragged to the hospital by police men claiming Duran was intoxicated and hallucinating. He was brutally attacked because of what he believed in, it didn't have anything to do with his skin color, as he was attacked by white police man and Duran turned out to be a Caucasian man with a family and a job. All of that was taken away from him the moment the cops dragged him into the hospital claiming he wasn't right in the head and the cops found him like that. In 2014 Donovan Duran, a Colorado MMA fighter, was beat and dragged to the
A national problem that is affecting me personally is the issue of police brutality. I am an African American female living in a society where there is an overlooked where between my community and the police task force. Before I delve into this topic, I need the reader to understand that I know all policeman are not bad and that all African Americans are not innocent. The problem I am addressing is the apparent discrepancy of police officers assuming that just because someone has a darker complexion that means that they are doing something illegal.
For months now, news channels and others have been posting videos of police brutality towards black people. Furthermore, the majority of these officers are of a white racial background. For many years, black people have been subjected to racism and bigotry. While people such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks have worked hard to end the discrimination of blacks, people continue to mistreat them, namely whites.
In America, police brutality is on the rise. 1297 Americans in 2014, 1307 in 2015, and 506 this year have died due to police brutality (Police Brutality Statistics). African American individuals are three times more likely to be killed in comparison to a white individual (Mapping Police Violence) . This issue has targeted black individuals because of their race. It has reached a point where many cops are not charged or convicted for their violence towards black individuals.
Benign black in America, how that sounds? People talk bad on your culture even when you are around. They say we are all equal, but how? The struggle of benign African American in America, goes a long way. From the Civil Rights Movement, where we just wanted equal opportunity to the Little Rock Nine, just a group of nine African American students enrolled in the Little Rock Central High School, they just wanted an education. They might of mention Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. several of times, but did they mention how Emmett Till was an 14 year old African American boy who whistled at an 21 year old white women, but she was unclear that he did it and her husband and his half-brother beat and shoot Emmett Till and put his body in the river and the
Cops have been able to get away with injustice for too long. White cops are using stereotypes to justify abuse, and that should end. In the case of Trayvon Martin, police brutality went too far. Not only did a cop unjustly shoot a 17 year old boy, but his trial was also acquitted and a he got to walk free. My movement, stands against this misuse of power in law enforcement. Spurred on by witnessing too many guilty people walk free just because they are synonymous with a badge. My movement has the drive to see equality across the board in America. In order to ensure the end of racial injustice and misuse of power by cops we propose that the judicial system take more responsibility in the trails of racially biased law enforcement. We understand
Police brutality is a major issue in today’s society. Many African Americans tend to avoid the police for that very reason. A campaign was started in 2012 against police brutality and the unfair treating of African Americans entitled, Black Lives Matter. This movement was met with controversy as well as support from the American people. This movement has followed several controversial police brutality cases in the United States including, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland. All African American and all killed in the presence of a police officer, with no convictions. These three cases have been some of the biggest cases in the Black Lives Matter campaign. This campaign is determined to make sure that Black lives are treated just as equally as white live and Hispanic lives, because black lives matter
Expression, one of the core freedoms expressed in our Bill of Rights, carries many forms. The case of Margery Washington and David Schultz versus the Chicago District 299 school board concerns two high-school students who chose to express their convictions by each wearing a hoodie and button to school in support of Trayvon Martin and in protest of controversy surrounding his death, the two students were asked by the school to remove them, citing a violation of the school dress code. After two days suspension, the students complied and removed the articles, but have petitioned their way to the Supreme Court. Given the invalidity of the punishment laid upon the students’, along with violation of the students’ First Amendment rights, precedent
However, police brutality has negatively impacted the United States in major ways. This wedge that is driven between law enforcement and citizens is starting to spark reckless behavior in the nation. The United States is supposed to be a united nation, but instead it is falling apart. The murders of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and countless other innocent people by police officers could be avoided in many ways. The OJ Simpson trial proves that police brutality has been a major issue for a long time. Instead of considering their other options, police thought the best way to handle these situations was to end the victims’ lives. The government needs to pay attention to this issue because it is something that can be fixed. Racism has been around since the beginning of time, but people feel as though it is a battle that cannot be won. It has also been recognized that the mentally-ill community is being affected by police brutality, as well. Two major groups are being discriminated against for something they cannot help, which is completely unfair. The Black Lives Matter movement is trying to end racism, police brutality, gender discrimination, and many other issues that exist today in the United States. This is why the government needs to listen to the people. This movement could change major things for the United States. It is time to come together as a nation and embrace our differences instead of discriminating against a person because of their
As I have read the two articles of Chaney and Robertson, and Yancy and Butler, it demonstrates that mostly black men and women particularly Africans are the most victim of the brutality by the police in America. The reasons behind this situation is all about race. The results are the racism and discrimination against blacks. There are a lot of instances that unarmed black men and women see as a threat by the police. In other words, it shows that blacks are dangerous and threats. However, having white skin did not see as a threat even if they did something suspicious. Chaney and Robertson states an example of an incident of Rodney King who was beaten by members of LAPD or Los Angeles Police Department. Then, because of this incident, many people
Police brutality is when a major issue in the US. Police officers should have limits on what actions they can take in order to stop police brutality. In some cases police brutality is really bad that innocent teenagers get shot. Most times the officer who has committed the crime gets let go and justice is never served. People in the community start protest against police brutality to stop it in any way they can.
Whatever is going on between the black community and the police force is reflective of the deep-seated racial system in the United States and in particular, within the US judicial system (Tharoor). Police brutality is a thorny issue in the US society mainly due to misconduct on the police side and hatred on the community’s side. However, the current police killings of black people and retaliation of the black community are not because every police officer is racial; they are rather a result of few bad elements in the US law enforcement system. Such police officers are making it dangerous for both the black population and the police force to coexist in the society. Therefore, it is my belief that the current situation between black people and the police is the result of the racism that exists in a few police officials.
Police brutality is an ongoing problem in the United States. Law enforcement agents are there to protect the public for they have the legal right to use physical, and even deadly, force. However, many of these officers abuse of that power. In the past year, there have been more than 900 cases of police abuse. Most of the victims have been innocent, unarmed, and/or of color. Police brutality is becoming more and more of an issue as society keeps growing. This nationwide problem could be solved in many ways, but having peaceful protests and by educating our police officers about racial differences are two good possible solutions.
On the other hand, implementing extra security measures in place by the law enforcement officials could definitely prevent a terrorist attack such as 9/11. The attacks killed 2,996 people and there were over 6,000 others that were injured (Britanicca.com). Additionally, Peter Bergen reported that the destruction of the World Trade Center and nearby buildings and businesses had caused a severe damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan. Because of the considerable amount of negative effect on global markets, it resulted in the closing of Wall Street for a few days. Evacuations, and cancellations followed shortly thereafter in commemoration for the victims and their families (Bergen). Many companies were also fearful of further attacks, securing
