The book is about Truman Capote studying the murders that happened in 1956 to the cutter family after two robbers broke in trying to steal the non-existent family safe. Capote saw an article that was put in the New York Times and called his best friend Harper Lee to go down to Kansas to see the murder scene. After they went down to investigate and write the findings. Whiles there, the two murderers were found in Vegas and were brought back to Kansas, tried and later hanged for their crimes.
Structure
The book is divided into four parts:The Last to See them alive, Persons Unknown, Answer, and The Corner. Within the sections there are “chapters”, but the sections have no titles. The first section leads up to the murders, Persons Unknown the murders themselves, Answers about the investigation and finding the murders, and The corner to them being caught and hung. There is also an introduction with background of the author and his works, acknowledgment to all of the people that have helping so much in the production of this book.
Exigence
This book was published in 1960, two years after the murders taken place. Capote saw a small 300-word article about the murders before the trial and expanded on it tremendously with first hand accounts taken from Holcomb, Kansas and after the trial and execution of the two suspects. Since this was still relatively new it gave readers a deeper look into this intriguing mystery.
