In the story” Recitatif”, Twyla and Roberta tells the story of two women who becomes acquaintances in a shelter during their youth and share a very rocky friendship from that point forward. The friends are tested by historical context, which leads to the friends having a “black-white” issue due to them being different racial. Twyla and Roberta both come from different type of lifestyles which is based off how the parents raised them into the kids they are today, but with them both being brought into this situation it leads to them both not wanting to be in a place full of strangers. As they come to terms they become the best of friends which leads to the two girls wanting their parents to help each other and become the best of friends also

During the course of the narrative Twyla describes her on and off again relationship with Roberta. The girls first meet during their short stay at St. Bonnie’s, which was an orphanage, they both were 8 years old. Neither of the girls were real orphans, and because of this they were alienated from the other girls, and they became friends real fast. Twyla’s mother is assumed to be a stripper, while Roberta’s mother was much too sick to care for her.

Then, due to his father’s, Damacio Baca, alcoholisms and violent behavior; he also had to leave Jimmy behind. In spite of the drawbacks from abandonment to being a maximum security prisoner in Arizona State Prison, Jimmy preserver’s the darkness of prison by overcoming his illiteracy. However Cecilia and Damacio is not as fortunate as their child; Cecilia is shot by Richard after confronting him for a divorce and Damacio chokes to death after he is released from the detox center(Baca 263). Therefore the most significant event in this section of the memoir, A Place to Stand by Jimmy Santiago Baca is the death of Jimmy’s parents.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during colonial America. Throughout the story a group of girls makes accusations a mass of people of practicing witchcraft, one of the worst crimes to commit during that period, and people are being sentenced to hang for denying witchery. In the Crucible there are many lessons that Arthur Miller wants to teach you. To me a lot of the lessons that were taught in this story are important but I feel like one of them is the most important. Arthur Miller demonstrates that one of the lessons implied in the story is people’s character and how it affects those people and others. Examples of character are Giles Corey, John Proctor, Abigail Williams.

It starts of with Reverend Parris, a man very concerned about his reputation, accusing his orphaned niece Abigail Williams of taking part in witchcraft after his daughter is unconscious after dancing in the woods. A technique used by Parris is characterization, which utilizes the thoughts, actions and dialogues in the construction of characters. Arthur Miller uses characterization to build the character of Reverend Samuel Parris as arrogant , selfish, and deceptive.

In the Crucible Play written by Arthur Miller women are portrayed in many different ways, but there are mainly 3 which are good, moral, and upright people. Other characteristics can be the complete opposite with these different type of women. The author Miller did not intend on portraying himself as a feminist, but he also doesn’t condemn all women to make them appear as “spotless” either. In the play he tries to show a balance of different people so that the story can be more believable, because the more personalities in different characters, the more realistic a story can portray. One of the characters that plays as a catalyst throughout the whole play is Abigail, she represents clearly as an antagonist, liar, thief, and is known for being a very manipulative person.

Bad things happen from people making decisions based on lies and fear, but evil things

“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure” (57). Two men that lived for their passion for adventure was Chris McCandless and Jay Moriarity. Chris McCandless was a young man who hitched hike to Alaska to explore and survive in the wilderness. Jay Moriarity was a young surfer who was determined to ride Mavericks, the largest waves. Chris's story was heard by a man named Jon Krakauer and Chris's story was developed and published into a novel for the world to hear, which got controversial feedback. Although both seem to come from very different lifestyles and had different pursuits for adventure, both share many qualities such as home life, preparation for goals, and the willingness to let people be there for them.
