In this essay, I will be analyzing a character from the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. By seeing how intense the passion was between Romeo and Juliet in this play, it’s not hard to see that the main theme of this play is love. The character that I will be analyzing will be Tybalt. The tension between Tybalt and Romeo was significant. So much so, that Romeo killed Tybalt later in the play which resulted in him being tossed into exile by the prince. What indirectly caused this fatal encounter was when Romeo attended the Capulet’s ball and Tybalt wasn’t too happy about his presence. However, the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt, occur when Romeo and Juliet take actions to protect themselves, but they are not however, protected. Juliet protects her relationship by committing a false death only for Romeo to believe it as true. As a result, the act to protect Romeo and Juliet’s relationship a secret are examples of the failed actions both Romeo and Juliet try to prevent; however, it is not ‘fate’ that control their lives and deaths.

This argument is about how Tybalt’s actions, which lead to his death, ultimately influenced and caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet compared to other characters and variables. The ending of Shakespeare’s famous play Romeo & Juliet, is devastating yet expected, as the “pair of star-cross’d lovers” (Prologue.9) dramatically kill themselves, leaving their friends and family in pure shock and sadness. In the play, the situations leading up to this dreadful incident should be blamed on the lovers themselves, as well as their secrecy with the absurd relationship that was caused by the couple’s family feud which definitely takes the blame for the double suicide. A long string of events that happened which lead to these deaths, were triggered by these three situations.

The Prince arrived to the scene and said “Romeo slew him, he slew Mercutio” (III.i.181), him referring to Tybalt, and once realized, he banished Romeo out of the city. Once Juliet discovered the truth about Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment she said in grief “Romeo is banished- to speak that word is father, mother, Tybalt, Romeo, Juliet, all slain, all dead- Romeo is banished” (III.ii.122-124). Her heartache for Romeo’s banishment more than her cousin Tybalt’s death shows that he is her life, her world, and her breath, and without him she would be nothing and life as she knows is would end, even through tragedy and anguish.
