Uncovering Historical Context
The Birth of Venus
Botticelli
The title of this piece is The Birth of Venus created in 1486 by Sandoro Botticelli. The piece of artwork originated in Uffizi, Florence. The name of the period style in which The Birth of Venus was created was technically considered naturalism, however, Botticelli did not follow the entire naturalist “rules.” While Venus is depicted as natural looking, there are some aspects of the artwork that fall into more of a contemporary style. For example, when looking at the portrait it seems as if Venus is falling over, as her weight is shifted onto her left foot. The purpose of The Birth of Venus was not entirely known or documented, however the piece showcases the goddess Venus coming out

The family came to wealth through their political power they gained during the time period. This family supported the arts during this Renaissance culture period, which ultimately gave Florence the hub of the Renaissance title. This family was most commonly known as the “House of Medici”. It has been noted that the Medici’s asked Botticelli to paint The Birth of Venus for them, as a Medici cousin, Lorenzo de’ Medici was a friend of Botticelli. Sandro Botticelli was an apprentice under a Medici artist, Filippo Lippi. Botticelli’s studio was actually inside the Medici palace. Due to his workspace within the Medici palace he eventually became friends with Lorenzo de’ Medici. The piece, The Birth of Venus definitely fit into the new liberal ideas of the Renaissance, as the piece was noted as “controversial”. His painting style changed over time, but The Birth of Venus remains a piece to be analyzed to this day. The Renaissance was a time for new ideas, and the artwork remains in Florence to this day.
Botticelli was able to master these techniques due to being taught by another prominent Renaissance artist, Filippo Lippi. First, there is a lot of detail. For example, there are hundreds of different types of flowers and leaves in the meadow. Upon looking closely at the clothing of the different characters, one can see the immense detail used by Botticelli in the tassels and fabric of the clothing. Furthermore, the flower detail connecting Flora to Chloris is a small detail that has a deeper emblematic meaning. The standing positions of characters give off a vibe of elegance and grace to viewers; according to Dr. Harris an Art Historian from Khan Academy, "She (Venus) tilts her head to one side and holds up her drapery and motions with her hands and looks directly at us," (Harris). The position of Venus is very elegant and inviting to viewers. Also, Botticelli portrayed the subject matter in a naturalistic way, a common convention of the Renaissance. Botticelli paid attention to the canon of proportions or the standard for symmetry of the face and body as evidenced by the similarities between the La Primavera and other Renaissance paintings, all of which depict the standards of beauty of the time or what was ideal beauty. Formally speaking, Botticelli went against the conventions of the
Titian’s Venus of Urbino, currently placed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence is one the most famous mythological nature Renaissance painting. This oil on canvas, life size painting of Venus of Urbino, is an “iconic version of reclining female nude,” from the Venetian Renaissance Period. This painting is an influenced artwork of Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus (later completed by Titian’s himself after Giorgione’s death.), which represented an idealized beauty and harmony in the majestic sleeping pose of a Goddess. This bold approach to the depiction of female sensuality by a leading Venetian painter of the cinquecento led to the citation of this painting as an origin of many other Western art’s
The two works of art that I have chosen is the painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli and the poem Stanze per la Giostra by Angelo Poliziano. The Birth of Venus was created between 1484 and 1486 by Sandro Botticelli. It was created in the early Renaissance period and is currently located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Stanze per la Giostra was written between 1475 and 1478 by the Renaissance poet Angelo Poliziano. Its current location is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, although it is currently not on display. The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la Giostra share many similarities as Stanze per la Giostra was Botticelli’s inspiration for creating The Birth of Venus. In The Birth of Venus, Botticelli has transformed Poliziano’s words into a beautiful work of art. These works of art share the theme of beauty. While Angelo Poliziano describes the beauty of the goddess Venus in his prose, Botticelli has captured her beauty with his delicate brush strokes. I will be comparing the theme of beauty between The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la Giostra as well as connecting it to contemporary standards of beauty.
When you here about the Medici Family, you most likely think of banking and wealth. It wasn't always like that. The Medici family first attained wealth and great political power in Florence in the 13th century through its big success in commerce and banking.
Sandro Botticelli and Angelo Poliziano were both working in the Medici court in Florence when the Medici commissioned the Bith of Venus for
The visual work that will be included is the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. The Birth of Venus was created in 1486, it is a tempera on canvas and measure roughly 5ft x 9 ft. It represents the story of the birth of Venus, the Roman goddess of Love. She was born from the seafoam and blown across the ocean by Zephyrus in a seashell. She epitomizes the beauty standards of this time, beautiful, soft and voluptuous. Botticelli used two different approaches in style when painting Birth of Venus. The characters in the foreground represent the chiaroscuro style of painting, adding light and dimension to the focal point of the piece while the background remains flat and uninteresting. Although there is a lack of perspective in Botticelli’s work, it does not take away from its overall appeal. (MindEdge, 7.07) The art was commissioned by a member of the Medici family and currently resides at the Galleria degli Uffzi in Florence, Italy. ("Birth of Venus | artble.com," 2017)
The House of Medici, or the Medici family, was a very influential and extremely powerful family during the time of the Renaissance in Italy. The Renaissance took place starting in the late 14th century. During this time, the people started to take interest in and have an appreciation for the classical times. The beginning of this powerful family really begins with Giovanni di Bicci deˈ Medici. He was born in the year 1360 in Florence, Italy. Originally from the Tuscan hillside, the Medici family immigrated to Florence during the 12th century. Giovanni di Bicci deˈ Medici was the man who really got the family moving. He founded the Medici Bank and began using money to gain influence. The Medici Bank eventually became the official bank of
The oil painting is known as Venus of Urbino, which was done in 1538 during the Renaissance time period. In Greek and Roman cultures, Venus was worshiped as a goddess. In her cult images, she was often depicted as a woman who possessed everything an ideal beautiful woman should have. During the Renaissance she was no longer literally considered to be a goddess. The title “Venus” was applied to a woman who is the idealized, sexualized form of beauty .
Botticelli created this piece for the Medici family. Humanism and individualism are both portrayed by the nudity of Venus and the dark lines painted around her body to emphasize its shape and the paleness of her skin. The figure of Venus is centered and a sense of beauty emerges from her idealized representation. This painting was inspired by the Greek poet Homer’s writings about Venus, and an ancient Greek sculpture known as Aphrodite of Cnidus. The contrapposto stature of Venus and female nudity—uncommon in medieval art—are examples of the classical Greek and Roman influence on the Italian Renaissance. Birth of Venus displays several pagan gods from Roman and Greek mythology.
Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, best know as Sandro Botticelli, was born on March 1, 1445. He was an Italian golden age artist of the Florentine School, during the Early Renaissance. He started being an apprentice when he was fourteen years old, receiving a fuller education than the others Renaissance painters. His most famous works are The Birth of Venus (1485) and Primavera (1477-78). Botticelli's ecclesiastical commissions work for many important Florence churches and for the Sistine Chapel, where he painted wall frescoes. In Florence, he spent almost all his life painting for the Medici family and their friends, including many portraits and his famous work ''Primavera''. Although, Sandro stayed little known for the centuries
Also known by the titles "Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time" and "A Triumph of Venus", this painting was on purpose designed as a complex, erotic allegory that includes an extent of iconographic symbols from the ancient world of mythology. It was a present from Cosimo de Medici to King Francis I of France. Being rich and vivid in symbolism relating to the constituting ideas of the High Renaissance, the painting gives Bronzino the opportunity to establish his maestro figure painting and portrait art. Through personification of qualities and varying contrast and brightness, Bronzino is able to justify that personal gains outweigh anything and everything that is moral.
The painting was a commissioned work for the Medici Family of Florence, a powerful political and financial family which would later go on to become an influential royal house for centuries. Throughout the painting, there is evidence of movement and a prevailing sense you
The Greek element of pose that Botticelli incorporated in his Venus figure is the pose called "contrapposto" that comes from the Ancient Greeks. This pose has a sense of movement and in the Renaissance, this painting depicts the painting to be alive and almost as if we can see the goddess of Venus's hair blowing in the wind as she comes to shore. This painting doesn't really depict contrapposto there is a type o curve to the body that suggests that she has a very flexible structure. In this painting, every one almost seems as if they are floating in the air. The painting is really linear and we notice this when we see how there are three groups, the god of wind is on the left, Venus in the center and the goddess of spring on the right all occupying
The Medici Family was an Italian banking family, they became a political dynasty and later on a royal house, that family started to gather prominence under Cosimo de’ Medici In the republic of Florence in Italy during the 14th century. The family was from the Mugello region of the Tuscan countryside, they were gradually rising until they fund the bank that was called the Medici Bank. The Medici Bank was the largest in europe during the 15th century, we can see that the Medici gained political power in florence, though officially the remained only citizens not monarchs. The Medici Bank became so powerful that they dominated the city’s government, they took over Florence, Florence was under their family’s power, they also created an environment
The painting, The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, created in 1484-1486, is tempera paint on canvas. Tempera is paint made with pigment that has a water-soluble binder. It was popular to use Canvas because it costed less than wood. The painting was created and inspired by the poet Homer because after Venus was born she rode on a shell. The painting shows a lot of detail in unexpected areas like the hair, sky, the shell, and more because of the brushwork. I think that there could be more detail in the facial expressions. I think that the artist tried to make her look pure because her face is calm. Giving birth is a beautiful thing but it is not calm. The Birth of Venus just shows purity and innocence. The face does have good detail because
