Theme within a story is the subject of the composition. With every story theme is vital, it sets up the story for the readers and is often referred to as the ¨ heart of the story¨. Theme can also be viewed as the transformation within the character of the protagonist prior to their journey. Theme has the power to change a good story to a compelling one. It draws a connection between the reader and character giving readers something to feel concern for and root for.Universal themes are themes that can apply to any story regardless of cultural differences. Beowulf is a poem that is not only seen but expressed in various ways and meanings.
Glory is one of the most telling themes enclosed in Beowulf. Glory is honor won by notable achievements. This is conveyed within Beowulf because of the desire of glory in the characters including Beowulf. Initially, Grendel saut revenge against mankind for his boiling jealousy of their fate compared to the heritage life had handed him.Grendel seeks reprisal by turning the kingdom of Herot upside down literally as well as figuratively. Herot stands as a symbol of what Grendel despised about men including their joy and glory. This is supported within the first few lines of the poem when we see Grendel's annoyance of the rejoicing and singing within Herot. Readers also get a glimpse of another side of revenge in Grendel's mother prior to the battle with Grendel and Beowulf.
