The following passage is from Act 3 Scene 3 of Julius Caesar, it includes the ability of Antony to manipulate and control his conversation with the citizens of Rome in order to sway the crowd against Brutus and Cassius. During this time in Rome, there was no leader. The citizens of Rome decided to offer Caesar the crown three times but he refused. One day, Caesar was going to go to the capital in order to be crowned but that didn’t happen. There was a group of conspirators who feared Caesar. One of them was Cassius. They felt that he would have too much power and he would turn away from the people. They decided to assassinate Caesar. This event led to Caesar’s funeral. Antony had a speech at Caesar’s funeral. He wanted the crowd to turn away from Brutus and Cassius. In Antony’s Eulogy speech, Mark Antony attempts to undermine the conspirators by persuading the citizens of Rome to join his side by showing that Caesar was not ambitious but a great leader through the use of rhetorical appeals like pathos and ethos, repetition, and rhetorical questions.

One of the rhetorical appeals that Antony used to sway the crowd against the conspirators was pathos. Pathos is an appeal using emotion. In line 20 Antony begins to use pathos when he states, “Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.” This quote is able to sway the crowd against Brutus and Cassius by showing what kind of good person Caesar was. He was compassionate to people. This quote shows what kind of good leader by helping out the poor. He knew what they were going through so he cried along with them.
