Francisco Goya and Vincent Van Gogh
A Giant Seated in a Landscape, sometimes called The Colossus by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes and Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace that was painted by Vincent Van Gogh are two very meaningful artworks. Regarding their nationalities, Goya’s artwork’s geographic location is Spain while Van Gogh’s is Dutch. Goya’s art is an etching that is part of the romanticism movement. Contrary to Goya’s, Van Gogh’s painting was created during the time of the post-impressionism art movement. These two artworks contrast each other very well, while also containing a few similarities with each other. Both artists depict a simple yet strong message in their artworks,

Romantic artworks were based on literature, art, and architecture. “Romantics were fascinated by dreams, hallucinations, sleepwalking, and other phenomena that suggested the existence of a world beyond that of empirical observation, sensory data, and discursive reasoning” (Thrasher). Goya’s drawing is centered on the giant who appears to be deep in thought. Going back to the colors Goya chose to use, the drawing conveys a sense of unease. In 1792, after becoming deaf from an unknown illness, Goya began to create etchings that were progressively darker and pessimistic. During his final years of life, he then began to create drawings that “expressed his dissatisfaction with the Ferdinand’s rule in a series of etching called ‘Los disparates’. These works featured a carnival theme and explored folly, lust, old age, suffering and death among other issues” (Biography). Goya’s piece, A Giant Seated in a Landscape, seems to be influenced by the unfortunate events he dealt with in his life as well as with the feelings he and many other Spaniards had during the time of Ferdinand’s rule. This assumption can be led by the fact that the giant seems to be in a slumped melancholy mood. On the other hand, the post-impressionism movement influenced Van Gogh’s painting. Impressionist artists “chose to break away from the practices of the previous century. For example, they stopped painting historic …show more content…

Vincent van Gogh is one of the world’s most well-known artists. He was the son of a pastor and was brought up in a religious atmosphere. He thought his true calling was to preach the gospel like his father. He became a preacher in a small coal mining town. This is when he starting becoming very interested in the people and things that surrounded him. He became an artist at the age of 27.
Salvador Dali was a pioneer. Few pages are not enough to tell the story of an eccentric, hardworking, disturbed and misunderstood master. Born in Figueras, Spain on May 11, 1904 near France into a middle class family. Childhood was turbulent, difficult, and abusive. Raised full of indulgences by his mother that resulted in the known eccentricities he had. (Dali, Secret Life, 115). Bright, extreme intelligent and fast learner child that created highly sophisticated drawings by age 6. In 1916 went to study drawing at College de Hermanos in Figueres, starting to show eccentric behavior for the first time.
One of the last topics we discussed in class turned out to be a form of art that probably interests me more than almost every other type of art that we have discussed this entire semester. That form of art is the impressionist style of painting. I really love all the different brush strokes that form different images for different people. I also enjoy much of the images that the impressionists painted, because they are usually very relaxed and mellow images that put you into a comfortable place. The post-impressionist period, especially very early post-impressionist, is even better I think. I think it’s better because it is just a little more refined and puts more emphasis on the figure and form of different objects. Since I enjoyed the post-impressionist’s
There have been different art forms that have come and go over the course of time. Hence I will discuss, two significant movements like Post-impressionism and Pop art. Two important artists from these movements are, Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol. There are many differences and very few similarities between these two movements and artists, although more differences. Van Gogh is one of the most captivating artists of post-impressionism. . Throughout his career Van Gogh has painted many works. One of those magnificent paintings is “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. In the other hand we will discuss one of the popular paintings “ Gold Marilyn” by Andy Warhol. Warhol is also the most famous of the Pop Artists and played a major role in making the art movement popular.
Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet are two highly influential contributors to the art world. Both are renowned artists whose creations are on display in several art museums throughout the world. They are two artistic geniuses who are more alike than they appear to be. While there are many similarities between the lives and art of these two prodigies there are numerous differences as well in their technique/style, subject matter, and personal lives.
Van Gogh based his paintings on the observable world around him, but he wanted to paint beyond the superficial reality of nature and express its mystery and power through an impulsive and spontaneous approach to painting. Self Portrait (dedicated to Gauguin) exhibits this desire. Although based on an observed scene, van Gogh uses non-naturalistic colors for expressive purposes. For example, van Gogh’s choice to paint a self-portrait on a baby-blue/light turquoise background was a radical step away from a naturalistically-colored background that would be seen in a Realist self-portrait (i.e.
Although Vincent van Gogh and Sol Lewitt share a similarity in their use of lines, overall, they have very different approaches in how they use these lines. Vincent van Gogh uses his lines in a loose, chaotic, free way. The way he uses the lines almost creates a mood within his artwork; it allows his pieces of art to show emotion and tell more of a story. As shown in Vincent van Gogh’s painting, The Sower, his use of different line types allows the painting to “…posses its own direction and flow”. Also, with van Gogh’s artwork, he seems to place the lines in groups, allowing them to create a more distinct picture.
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most infamous and influential artists of all time. When I saw that Van Gogh’s painting “Olive Trees With Yellow Sky and Sun” was on display at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, I knew I had to choose it for this paper. Before doing the research for this assignment, I didn’t know much about Vincent Van Gogh, but the fact that pretty much everyone knows his name and recognizes him as a huge part of art history, it made me naturally really curious about him.
Francisco Goya’s The Executions of May 3, 1808, is a remarkably interesting piece of art. This piece represents a protest against the Napoleon Occupational Army in Madrid. There are various visual elements and design principles in the art, which will be covered. The beginning of this ILO will contain the visual elements first, followed by the design principles, and what they mean in the artwork.
Pablo Picasso’s way of drawing can be seen as very different and rather similar at the same time compared to Vincent Van Gogh’s method. Drawing allowed van Gogh to capture light and images more quickly than with painting and
His art represented the reaction against previous conceptions of art and the desire for a new form of expression. In order to understand the scope of Goya's art, and to appreciate the principles which governed his development and tremendous versatility, it is essential to realize that his work extended over a period of more than 60 years.
A great artist once wrote, “If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced”. This artist was Vincent van Gogh, soon to be an appraised artist known all around the world for his works, such as Starry Night. He is one of the very first artists of the post-impressionist style than is now adored in every continent. However, there is much more to the man than one painting. Creating a full timeline that stretches beyond Gogh’s life, this paper will discuss the life of Vincent van Gogh and the impression he made on the world.
As well as Matisse’s Bonheur de Vivre, Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon was inspired by and deviated from Cezanne’s great achievement. Cezanne’s landscape is a broad open field with the abstract females surround a pond as they bath with abstract surroundings, very much different from Picasso’s
One of Vincent Van Gogh’s most world renowned paintings is his landscape oil painting Starry Night. The painting displays a small town underneath an unusual yet still extremely beautiful night sky. In this night sky, Van Gogh utilizes an array of colors that blend well together in order to enhance the sky as a whole. The town is clearly a small one due to the amount of buildings that are present in the painting itself. In this small town most of the buildings have lights on which symbolize life in a community. Another visual in Starry Night is the mountain like figures that appear in the background of the illustrious painting. Several things contribute to the beauty of Van Gogh’s painting which are the painting’s function, context, style, and design. Van Gogh’s utilization of these elements help bring further emphasis to his work in Starry Night.
