Francisco Goya and Vincent Van Gogh
A Giant Seated in a Landscape, sometimes called The Colossus by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes and Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace that was painted by Vincent Van Gogh are two very meaningful artworks. Regarding their nationalities, Goya’s artwork’s geographic location is Spain while Van Gogh’s is Dutch. Goya’s art is an etching that is part of the romanticism movement. Contrary to Goya’s, Van Gogh’s painting was created during the time of the post-impressionism art movement. Romantic artworks were based on literature, art, and architecture. “Romantics were fascinated by dreams, hallucinations, sleepwalking, and other phenomena that suggested the existence of a world beyond that of empirical observation, sensory data, and discursive reasoning” (Thrasher). Goya’s drawing is centered on the giant who appears to be deep in thought. Going back to the colors Goya chose to use, the drawing conveys a sense of unease. In 1792, after becoming deaf from an unknown illness, Goya began to create etchings that were progressively darker and pessimistic. During his final years of life, he then began to create drawings that “expressed his dissatisfaction with the Ferdinand’s rule in a series of etching called ‘Los disparates’. These works featured a carnival theme and explored folly, lust, old age, suffering and death among other issues” (Biography). Goya’s piece, A Giant Seated in a Landscape, seems to be influenced by the unfortunate events he dealt with in his life as well as with the feelings he and many other Spaniards had during the time of Ferdinand’s rule. This assumption can be led by the fact that the giant seems to be in a slumped melancholy mood. On the other hand, the post-impressionism movement influenced Van Gogh’s painting.
