Karley Chiodo Health Care Professions Essay: Venom One January 2015 The health care profession I chose to research is the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Venom Response Program, also known as the Venom One team. The Venom One team is an elite group of specially trained firefighters/paramedics that is part of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. They are the only emergency response team specializing in antivenom treatment, and they run the only anti-venom bank open for public use in the United States. They once had a documentary series on the channel Animal Planet called Swamp Wars. General employees of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue need the following forms of education: State of Florida Firefighter-11 Certification, State of Florida Paramedic (EMT-P) Certification, and a high school diploma or GED. Favoritism is expressed towards alumni of the …show more content…
Additionally, the Venom One team has training in response, management, and treatment of envenomation. The annual salary of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue employees is in the range of $39,436-$68,882. A usual work day for the Venom One team would entail capturing dangerous fauna in Miami-Dade County and delivering antivenom in time to save a life from the effects of an envenomation. Antivenom is an antidote for venom that counters a specific venom or venom type. It is made to treat the venom of snakes, arachnids, scorpions, and poisonous amphibians. Also called antivenin, it is effective on the majority of recipients, but only if it is administered within a small window of opportunity before the venom does too much damage to or outright kills the victim. Antivenom’s manufacturing is similar to a vaccination. A vertebrate,
This level requires the Basic training plus another 250 hours of training. They do everything the EMT-Basic is required to perform in addition to administering intravenous (IV) fluids and medicine.
Next, is the venom...the worst part of all. You definitely don't want to get bit. A single bite from a King Cobra can deliver enough venom to kill a full grown Elephant within 3 hours! Only ¼ people survive a bite from the vicious King
The scientists believe that the venom of the Brazilian wasps could be used in the fight against cancer. The BBC reported that according to the lab tests, toxin kills cancer cells while healthy cells remain intact.
To become an EMT you'll need a high school diploma or GED and formal emergency training. There are three levels of EMT training . Emergency Medical
This “cocktail” has coevolved to target the snake’s prey of choice (Margres etc., 165). Over time, natural selection typically causes these venoms to become slightly different among species in different populations. This occurs because a prey animal with a gene that resists a snake’s venom would be favored by natural selection, which would prompt an evolutionary response from the snake to make alterations to its venom to combat this resistance (Aiyar, Raeka). This results in distinct predator-prey co-adaptations, which leads to great diversity among regions and the concentration of venom proteins (Margres etc., 167). This is evident in populations of the Eastern diamondback. “For example, two venom components, including one known to cause paralysis in prey, are found at high levels in the Northernmost populations, and were completely absent in the snakes from Caladesi Island, near Tampa” (Aiyar, Raeka). However, an exception to this pattern has been
One of the main reasons I want to join Gwinnett County Fire and emergency service is because in 2011, Gwinnett county was granted accreditation for the paramedics training program by the Medical Service Professions, making it the first county in Georgia to have it’s own accredited training program. I hereby understand that if I complete the paramedics program
In the article,”Australia has lots of venomous critters, bug stings, bites rarely deadly” by the Newsela staff talks about how many people are scared of animals in Australia. Like there is a box jellyfish that it’s consider the most toxic sea animal on the planet and it can release strong chemicals that it even can take someone life away.
During my high school year, I was fortunate to take a college course called Opportunity Emergency Care. This course provided me with a lot of insights on what is expected of a Healthcare Provider. I learned how to collect patient history and vitals, respond to emergencies like heart attack, allergies etc., do patient assessments including physical, and most importantly respond to trauma. Through this course I went to camp in Wisconsin, and also did few volunteers.
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a cobra? From what I’ve found out, cobras live a very interesting life, from how they react to predators and prey, to the different types of cobras out in the world. Cobras have the scientific name of Naja, which means “little sister” in Greenlandic. Another fascinating fact, all though it is very sad, is that cobras are threatened by deforestation, forest fragmentation, and illegal wildlife trade. How cobras live and survive is mainly based upon their behavior, environment, and their different types of species.
Death is inevitable for everyone. We all grow at different rates and grow up to look and feel different. In 2015, the average age of death was 80 years old. This makes a person think on what she should do before there life ends. Death is a surprise, and we never know when the last day is for anyone. The biggest question that comes to arise is what would you do if you knew the next day was your last? If I knew the next day was my last day to live, I would sky dive in a squirrel suit and drag race in a Hennessey Venom GT.
Once it is secreted, the venom encounters the newly created tissue. A new tissue must be formed to prevent self-harm from transpiring. This new tissue is called smooth acidic muscle. To transport the venom along the system an involuntary muscle tissue is required. The venom is carried throughout the system by involuntary wave like movements similar to those that occur in peristalsis. The venom eventually encounters the first set of cuspid valves in order to prevent backflow of venom, as a large concentration can be harmful. Once the venom passes the valves the formation of poison can finally occur within either of the poison chambers. The poison chambers also contain smooth acidic muscle to make sure the gas keeps moving forward and prevent any damage to the organ itself. The last set of cuspid valves are present towards the opposite end, which leads to the next organ ductus medium. The Ductus medium is a long duct which contains smooth acidic muscle and skeletal acidic muscle. The smooth muscle is again present to regulate airflow throughout the duct. The skeletal acidic muscle only appears towards the end
