Victor Frankenstein, main character in Mary W. Shelley novel Frankenstein discovered the secret of creating new life and become fascinated with the possibility of giving life to lifeless matter. He is consumed by the idea, working day and night not caring that he “tortured the living animal to animate the lifeless clay” (48). Irresponsible young man, not thinking it through creates “human being…of a gigantic statue” (47). Without thinking how he, the creator, will care for his creations. Without considering what the life is going to be for the creature he creates. He gives his creation life. He was in such a hurry to animate his creation that he didn’t pay attention how the creature looked. He and only he knows the secret of the process. He
The definition of a monster is very arguable. A monster is typically seen as something inhuman and hideously scary. A human could also be a monster in that they could be extremely wicked or cruel. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein, creator of the creature, is the real monster because he is a hypocrite, he created the monster and abandoned him, and he is extremely selfish.
Throughout the novel, “Frankenstein,” the “monster” was seen as hideous. As a result, many including the creator himself did not give the “monster” a chance and portrayed him as evil. Rather than looking at his personality, they looked at his outward appearance, which scared them off and made them assume he was a “monster.” When readers, including myself, read this story, we feel disappointed about how during this time everything revolved based upon looks and not on what really mattered like charisma. Overall he is portrayed as an evil, scary creature. When Victor describes him he is so harsh and cruel it makes him seem to be a monster. “He held up the curtain of the bed; and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks,” (Shelley 59) this phrase proves how when Victor describes the monster he did not care to think about what the monster was trying to say because he was too scared of his horrible looks.
In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein we are introduced early in the story to one of the main characters Victor Frankenstein and subsequently to his creation referred to as the monster. The monster comes to life after being constructed by Victor using body parts from corpses. As gruesome as this sounds initially we are soon caught up in the tale of the living monster. Victor the creator becomes immediately remorseful of his decision to bring the monstrous creation to life and abandons the borne creature. Victor describes his emotions and physical description of his creation as follows:
The Frankenstein monster is often portrayed in the movies as unemotional and violent: a barely functioning behemoth. However, these depictions are far from the canon storyline. In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein, the creator of what shall be called the Creature, was actually rivaled in empathy and joie de vivre by his wretch. Throughout the story, the Creature showed more compassion and emotion than Frankenstein, but committed multiple monstrous things after facing neglect and trauma.
Victor Frankenstein made a monster that he was scared of himself and what he had made. Victor was a smart man but he was tempted to find a way to escape death and made a monster that would kill William and the reason that Justine died. But the monster known today a s frankenstein shows us a lot of trying to to a person and fix into society but many people are scared of how he look and they ran him of of the village that he walk into. The main support that shows that frankenstein wants to be a human a person that can fit in is that he is willing to go and live in south America but all he wants is a female.”You must create a female for me with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being.” that was when the
In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein is a static character. Such characters undergo few, if any changes to their personality. Frankenstein, throughout the entire novel, makes several promises, statements, and lists obligations that he never honors and blatantly contradicts and never changed on his quest to get vengeance.
What is a monster? The word "monster" causes one to imagine a hideous, deformed or nonhuman creature that appears in horror movies and novels and terrifies everyone in its path. More importantly, however, the creature described generally behaves monstrously, doing things which harm society and acting with little consideration for the feelings and safety of others. "Thus, it is the behavior which primarily defines a monster, rather than its physical appearance"(Levine 13).
(Shelley). The fact that Frankenstein fled from his creation very shortly after it came to life, proves how he refused to accept his obligations and responsibilities after his creature was created. ?The [creature] is Frankenstein?s abandoned child? (Mellor Abandonment 357). It is unfair to bring something into the world, and then not teach it how to survive. Victor was intimidated by his hideous characteristics and felt threatened by the creature. He did not know his creation at all, so he had no right to judge him. This is an example of how various people and society place too much judgment on physical appearance. The creature had just come into the world for the first time, and the first thing he saw was his creator screaming for his life as a result of his appearance. This traumatized the creation, and caused him to seek revenge on Frankenstein. This novel shows how when people are prejudice against physical deformity or ugliness, it automatically characterizes that person as bad or monstrous (Halberstam 59). Victor was the one who gave him these characteristics; so in fact, he is to blame for the creature?s appearance being so monstrous.
Imagine creating something but you instantly regret it. This was the situation of Victor Frankenstein, he was intrigued to the point of obsession about reanimating life. Victor created life in a not so pleasant way. He used a collection of remains from different people to make a new life form.
Although some critics view Victor Frankenstein as a Tragic Hero because of his one essential flaw, his overambitious desire to discover what cannot be known, he is truly a Byronic Hero by definition. Although Victor is of a higher social class than the average person and his essential flaw triumphs all of his others, he has a deeply troubled past, struggles with integrity, secludes himself away from society, and is a willful individual who seeks redemption by carving out his own path. Victor’s many, deep flaws, which often induce the reader to believe that he is actually the antagonist and the Monster the hero, and ultimate redemption in telling Robert Walton his life’s story make him a Byronic Hero.
“We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.”(Charlie Chaplin) a powerful statement that applies strongly to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Victor Frankenstein created his being due to his thirst for alchemy and his unnatural obsession with being God-like. Once created the creature is denied love and companionship by his creator and humanity. The creature’s appearance is too monstrous for humanity to look past and see the good in the creature. As the novel progresses, the creature’s good nature slowly dissipates leaving him an angry and violent murderer after being subject to constant rejection by all who encounter him. Mary Shelley holds Victor responsible for the creature’s violent actions shown throughout the novel. Victor’s lack of responsibility for his creation was selfish,Victor allowed the creation
Frankenstein worked to become the God of a master race that he created. Frankenstein robbed graves of limbs, teeth, organs, and tissue in order to begin his perfect race of beings. In Frankenstein’s tale, he explains that “His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips.”(Shelley, 42). Frankenstein created a monster with no deficiencies physically, as creature virtually had the perfect human frame. The creature had superhuman qualities, as Frankenstein describes an encounter he had with creature, “As I said this I suddenly beheld the figure of a man, at some distance, advancing towards me with superhuman speed.”(Shelley, 80). The animation of creature marked a pivotal point in humanity, as Victor Frankenstein has accomplished no other scientist had, he animated a creature with abilities that nothing could surpass. Overall, Frankenstein worked to push the bounds and limits of science
Victor goes through with creating the female monster. Once created many emotions flood Victor. Banerjee explains how the female monster scares victor. Victor is scared of the strength the female could have over him. The monster is already mad at Victor from previous action.
Victor Frankenstein, the famous scientist who born so differently and unique during his short life. He is the one who can become our graceful hero, to lead more people start to pursue science, to encourage more coward getting remorseless. Just like what he did in science, he was the kind of person who believe himself can shock the world and he actually did proof to us by his incredible talent and inspiration. Yes, that’s one of the reason that why I pick him as my super hero in my heart. His curiosity and loyalty to seek knowledge, one of his university professor told him what he know in the past are useless. Surprisingly, he is well accepted advice from what other people. This scrappy determination and motivation are valuable and
We all walk this world, living our lives the way we want to. We decide how we want it to go and how we want to be seen by others. Victor Frankenstein lived in the romantic 1800’s period and tampered with life. The way he chose to live was beyond the ordinary. Was Frankenstien a hero? Was he a hero for all he accomplished and did in his life? For me the answer is no, Victor Frankenstein was not a hero, he tampered with life and death, he caused pain to loved ones as well as himself, and Frankenstein chose to do something but initially not follow through with the final outcome.
