Vincent Van Gogh famously stated,“If you hear a voice in you say ‘you cannot paint’, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”One would never engage in an activity in which you have no skill. To achieve this skill you must engage in this activity frequently and learn from one’s errors. The only thing that will detain you from achieving this is doubt and fear. Vincent was secretive and did not blend in with other children. Elisabeth later claimed “not only were his little brothers and sisters like a stranger to him, but he was a stranger to himself as well.(Vincent pg 7 paragraph 5)” however, he would engage in the family life and show affection in his home circle. Vincent could be in a moment of excitement and then in a moment of depression and sadness. There were multiple moments that impacted Vincent’s life. He traveled to many places to work and never saw hope in life until he met and fell in love with Ursula ( who was his landlady’s daughter). When Vincent gained enough courage, he avowed his love for her and also asked her to marry him. She laughed claiming she was already engaged and Vincent, after hearing this, became heartbroken and returned to his depressing state with the belief that there is no hope in life. Furthermore, Vincent was mentally challenged, he became fixated and close to God and the bible. It behooved him to become a pastor like his father, and so he did. He wanted to send God’s message to the crowd in sermons but became too obsessed. Vincent had a “fervent sense of vocation but was handicapped by his instability, his excessive zeal and exaggeration he displayed in everything he took up. Despite the disappointments that goes on in one’s life, failure can become a success. Richard Wright and Vincent Van Gogh are two examples of rags to riches. Richard had to overcome many obstacles to get where he is at now. Vincent dealt with illnesses and rejection most of his life. The one thing that both of these men have in common is they started off with nothing but ended up with something.
Vincent van Gogh is one of the world’s most well-known artists. He was the son of a pastor and was brought up in a religious atmosphere. He thought his true calling was to preach the gospel like his father. He became a preacher in a small coal mining town. This is when he starting becoming very interested in the people and things that surrounded him. He became an artist at the age of 27.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.

On March 30, 1853 Vincent was born to minister Theodorus Van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. He was born in Zundert, Netherlands. Vincent was named after his stillborn brother that had been born exactly a year before Vincent. The name Vincent was actually very common in the Van Gogh family. Vincent shared his name with his uncle and grandfather. He also shared the name with his great great uncle, the sculptor Vincent Van Gogh (1728-1802).

While suffering from mental illness and poverty throughout his life, he was still able to capture the essence of beauty and color through his expressionistic, abstract technique as well as influence in Japanese art. Van Gogh, being a post-impressionist artist, is stated to be the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt. By the time he was 15, his dad died at his work and Vincent was left with his mom. Since his dad wasn’t around to fund them, they didn’t have money for funeral expenses. They had to burry him in a cemetery by themselves and didn't tell anyone. They went two year feeling lonely and Vincent had an idea of going to a witch’s house. When he got there, he told her the story about him wanted to bring him back to life. The witch gave him a potion to bring back the dead. Vincent made a deal with her since he didn't have money that she would give him the potion and he would give her all his jewelry. They shook hands and Vincent went home.
Around 1890, an artist by the name of Vincent Van Gogh who present day is one of the most renowned artists created magnificent, yet mysterious drawings which he started with just a pencil. From his pencil drawings with lines and dashes to the beautiful variations with using paint, Vincent was a genius, but was never congratulated on his work until later. Even as he was pronounced crazy, he could still create beautiful works of art which shows how even a flower can bloom in a dark forest. As his life was slowly being painted on canvas from the years of solitude and psychiatric problems he finally killed himself which a couple years later brought up his artwork through his own suicide.

The artist led a tragic and depressing existence from a young child, which continued throughout his adult years until his early departure at the young age of 37. Van Gogh left behind a legacy of beautiful and interpretive paintings, which express appealing landscapes, delicate flowers, and humanity in their surroundings. It begs the question, how could a gifted artist depict and interpret society so well in his paintings but have an inability to make personal connections

He was a Dutch painter which was one of the 4 artists who led the movement Post-Impressionism (the use vivid colors, thick application of paint, and real-life subject matter), Van Gogh made about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 paintings. He didn’t have a good life. Van Gogh was constantly depressed, got heartbroken multiple times in his life (he never got married), and was insane. He suffered from psychotic episodes and hallucinations. Often, he didn’t care and neglected he was mentally unstable. For this reason, he did not eat properly and drank a lot.
Observers of Van Gogh’s life believed that his eccentricities, compounded to create many distressing experiences that directly impacted the development of Expressionism.
