Vincent van Gogh battled with psychological and emotional problems beginning at a very young age in his life which eventually led to suicide at the age of 37. Exactly one year before he was born, his mother gave birth to a stillborn child with the same name. Growing up having to see his name and birthday on a headstone caused some real emotional distress is the young artist’s life. Van Gogh had his first mental breakdown after the woman he loved refused to marry him. Afterwards he devoted himself to God and dabbled in ministry for a little while until he refused to take the entrance exams into priesthood because he didn’t like the latin language, and forced to find a new occupation away from preaching. That is when he took up art as a profession. His brother, Theo, sponsored him as he was getting started.

On a smaller canvas than two other similar paintings, Vincent Van Gogh carefully painted for the third time his bedroom in Arles, a charming town in the south of France, and thus created this approximately 22 ½ x 29’’ artwork. In fact, Van Gogh made three almost identical paintings on the theme of his bedroom and are named « Bedroom in Arles ». Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 at the Zundart Netherlands. Vincent Van Gogh was a post impressionist. Van Gogh's paintings stand out from other artists of his time. The colors he used most were lemon yellow and blue. His self-portraits are wet with blue background, coat, and eyes, and with a yellow face, beard, and hair. Stars and books, which were his passion, were painted yellow.

Around 1890, an artist by the name of Vincent Van Gogh who present day is one of the most renowned artists created magnificent, yet mysterious drawings which he started with just a pencil. From his pencil drawings with lines and dashes to the beautiful variations with using paint, Vincent was a genius, but was never congratulated on his work until later. Even as he was pronounced crazy, he could still create beautiful works of art which shows how even a flower can bloom in a dark forest. As his life was slowly being painted on canvas from the years of solitude and psychiatric problems he finally killed himself which a couple years later brought up his artwork through his own suicide.

The oldest of six children, Vincent was named after his parent’s first child that was stillborn. Vincent’s mother rejected him and this left a lasting despair within van Gogh. Due to financial difficulty, Vincent left school at an early age and began working at his Uncle’s art dealership. In 1873, he transferred to the Groupil Gallery in London where he enjoyed English culture and would frequent art galleries. This was also during a time Vincent first fell in love and upon rejection of his marriage proposal, he had a mental breakdown. It is understandable how rejection played a significant and damaging role in Vincent’s troubled life. In the fall of 1880, van Gogh decided to move to Brussels and become and become an artist, his art helped him stay emotionally balanced and continued to develop his first masterpiece the “Potato Eaters”. His brother Theo had said that his artwork would not be well- received and van Gogh appeared at Theo’s house uninvited in Paris but Theo welcomed his brother. In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh had moved into “little yellow house” and spent money on paint rather than food, he had been living on coffee, bread and absinthe. He had been feeling unwell and very strange, it had become evident that he was suffering physical illness, his psychological health was failing; around this time he had discovered that he had sipped turpentine and had eaten paint. Theo was very concerned about van Gogh and had offered Paul Gauguin money to supervise van Gogh in Arles, within a month van Gogh and Gauguin were frequently arguing which lead to Gauguin to walk out one night. Van Gogh had followed him and when Gauguin had turned around he saw van Gogh with a razor in his hand, hours later van Gogh went to the local brothel

Everybody has heard of the name Vincent Van Gogh. Maybe you’ve heard about his ear or you’ve seen his painting “The Starry Night”. Perhaps you had seen one of his paintings but didn’t know who he was. I am happy to tell you: today is your lucky day. You will be learning a little about him. Observers of Van Gogh’s life believed that his eccentricities, compounded to create many distressing experiences that directly impacted the development of Expressionism. Vincent then attended preparatory classes with intense lessons of Dutch, German, French, and English along with the traditional array of math and science courses. Yet for reasons unknown, in March of 1868, Vincent returned to his home in Zundert. His boyhood came to a close in July of 1869 when he joined the art business as a dealer for Goupil & Co. This was a family tradition, as three of his uncles, including one also by the name of Vincent, were also art dealers. Vincent’s brother Theo would also become an art dealer four years after him. As a young child, Vincent was not known for his own creation of art. Though his family made a great impact on his view of dealing art, he was not an art prodigy like other famous arts such as Henri de Toulous-Lautrec and Pablo Picasso were. Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous artists of all time. He is known for his paintings and is hailed as the quintessential expressionist painter in history. Yet, Van Gogh lived one of the most troubling lives one could ever imagine. Almost every painting can be viewed as a look into his troubled soul. This is when he began painting and eventually moved to Paris. Once moving there his paintings became more colorful and his painting style began to develop.
