“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, to draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” is a key quote from Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Though there are many similarities between the original short story and the film version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, such as Walter being treated with a lack of respect, there are also discrepancies such as the different portrayals of the character of Walter Mitty.
One similarity that exists in both the short story and the film is Walter being treated with disrespect. For example, in the short story, Walter takes off his gloves while behind the wheel, and a cop snaps at him. Similarly, in the film, Walter is treated with disrespect when his coworker, Ted Hendricks, and he are in an elevator, and Walter daydreams that Ted Hendricks tried to take his toy and it turned into an epic battle. Walter comes back into reality and sees that Ted and his other coworkers are laughing as they cannot seem to get his attention. Specifically, in the movie, the viewer can see that Walter progresses and changes as the movie goes on. For example, at the beginning of the film, he daydreams repetitively and does not seem to have a thrilling life, but as the story goes on we see a change in his personality and a more adventurous Walter Mitty. However, in the story from beginning to end, Walter appears to be daydreaming a lot and does not see the value in living life in reality.
