What if you lived in a town of trials where, friends turned on friends? I believe Abigail Williams is guilty of witchcraft because, she was seen dancing in the woods conjuring spirits. Abigail also lied in court about Marry Warren’s poppet and, about her being a bird. First of all Abigail was caught dancing in the woods with other girls conjuring spirits. This started the witchcraft hysteria, because of this, people were being accused of witchcraft, and sent to court, jail or even death. Secondly, Abigail Williams lied in court many times. One time about having the needle in her stomatch, which led to Elizabeth proctor being sent to jail. Another time she lied in court about Marry Warren sending her spirit out to attack her. This caused
Abigail goes to high extents in order to protect the virtue of her reputation. She carries out various mistakes and each mistake led to another mistake. At first, she dances in the forest, and tries magic to kill Elizabeth Proctor. This mistake leads to Abigail lying and therefore beginning the witch trails.
Human nature can be defined as characteristics, feelings, or traits that of all humans share. Human characteristics and traits can differ from personal cultural background and or by the community that you are surrounded in. The significance of your community and culture is that it can be of importance since it could affect you negatively or positively. Human nature is by origin naturally good but is corrupted gradually or abruptly by the community or religion. Individuals from society and society itself can immensely make an impact on people.
Mary Warren, that weakling, attempted to bring about the truth about Abigail but Danforth and Parris, loggerheaded, flap-mouthed louts, attacked her. She even decided to lie to make Danforth and
It all starts in the beginning of the play when Abigail and the other teenage girls of Salem are found dancing around in the forest by Parris, her uncle (Miller 19). I bring up this event because this is when the chaos begins. The rumor of witchery activity is spread, first through the close ones of Abigail and soon the other girl’s relatives. Later, the whole village finds out and the accusations and questioning begin. When Abigail starts getting targeted, she
Abigail influenced all the girls to lie and convict innocent people and this all for one person, John Proctor. Abigail obviously had a huge crush on John Proctor and it was probably because of his previous affair with Abigail. There was only one problem John no longer had feeling for her and he was in love with his wife Elizabeth. John really didn’t pay much attention to Abigail anymore which basically started this whole thing. Abigail thought that by dancing around a fire like a hooligan would cast a spell and make him fall in love and that definitely didn't work. John still didn’t pay attention to her and she knew she had to try and take Elizabeth out. She ended up stabbing herself because the poppet had a needle in it and that’s how elizabeth was sent to court. Obviously none of this worked out because John and Elizabeth still loved each other and Abigail ended up running away. So Abigail was a very dark force in the town of
Furthermore Abigail has shown she can not be trusted. For example, she lied about conjuring spirits in the woods and when the other girls said they should tell the truth she told them they would be hanged so we have to lie. She would say are make any one tell a lie to stay out of trouble. She accused others of witchcraft
In January of 1692, the witchcraft hysteria began when a group of young girls became sick after playing a fortune-telling game and began acting strangely. These girls later became known as the “afflicted girls” (David 12). The afflicted girls, Elizabeth Booth, Elizabeth Hubbard, Mercy Lewis, Betty Parris, Ann Putnam, Jr., Susannah Sheldon, Abigail Williams, Mary Walcott, and Mary Warren are very important people in the Salem Witch Trials. There are conflicting opinions on whether or not witches exist. However, when taking a more in-depth look at the trials, it is very evident that witches in 17th century Salem did not exist; children were accusing people out of boredom, parents were using this as a type of revenge, and the witch tests were unjust.
Murderers aren’t murderers when they’re hiding. Murderers aren’t murders when they haven’t been caught. Or so that is what they say, but if they say that then what is Abigail Williams hiding from? And if she’s hiding from something then will her lies protect her or just hide the people she’s killing from finding out the truth? Abigail Williams and the Witchcraft trials feature people being hanged because they are thought to be practicing something that’s not Christian. And Abigail Williams goes along with that idea and lying and continues to lie even when it results in people dying. Abigail Williams is guilty even if others are to blame it doesn’t excuse the fact that she did what she did. A compulsive liar is what makes her brain spin.
Children were taught that what their parents told them was one-hundred percent true and the adults were told what to tell the children by the church. Also women were viewed lesser than men. Miss Abigail had a grudge against goody proctor and wanted to take her place as Johns wife and she will do anything to get what she wants. She accuses her of owning a voodoo doll of Abigail and sticking a needle in the stomach. The town had never seen this before and Abigail was easily able to convince her group to back her up on it. Thus the Salem witch hunt had begun. The thought of actual witches stormed through the town and hearing that the accused person may be hanged immediately brain washed the towns people. I do not blame Abigail as the reason why it started because anyone could have made a bogus accusation with tampered evidence and it spread throughout the
I believe Abigail Williams was a regular girl in need of attention and power. First , she accused regular, innocent people of witchcraft .For example, she claimed that Goody Proctor used her spirit to stab her with a needle, a needle like the one found in the poppet Goody had received from Mary Warren. She stabbed herself to get the people of the town to side with her. Secondly, she would act like spirits were attacking her. Her and the other girls would scream and some would pass out when a certain person she accused of witchcraft would enter the room. She would make herself and the others scream just so she could sell the act even better. Abigail Williams, I believe, is a crazy girl who accused the innocent of
During the time of Salem Witch trials or more specially in my case; The Crucible there was this one girl in partially who caught most of the punishment just to shorten a film but nonetheless in The Crucible she shown had shown some traits like scapegoating witchery on others or being greedy for popularity and even having a hunger for power so her 11 year old self could get with a 60 year old.
The dancing in the woods done by Abigail and the other girls never actually happened. The beginning of the Salem Witch Trials began when Betty Paris, Abigail Williams, and many other girls formed a circle to practice fortune telling and to hear stories of witchcraft. They used this as a form of entertainment to pass the time of the long winter months. Abigail and Betty did not like the outcome of their fortunes that Tituba gave them.
I agree with Winona Ryder in the sense that Abigail Williams craved attention and led people to believe that witchcraft was present in Salem to gain power; however, I don’t think she was entirely innocent. Abigail essentially sparked the idea of witchcraft in her attempt to be with John Proctor, when she tried to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor. In Act I, Betty calls Abigail out, saying she drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife, to which Abigail threatens her. After being seen in the woods together, the girls are all accused of witchcraft, but they twist it around on others in the town. Abigail convinced all her friends to go along with this plan, even threatening to harm them if they speak against her. In Act III, when Mary Warren confessed
Abigail accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft by setting her and Mary Warren up. She has Mary, Elizabeth’s maid, bring a poppet into her home which Abigail placed a needle into. She faked a stabbing, saying that Elizabeth participated in witchery and stabbed her. This brought not only Elizabeth down, but Mary Warren as well. Mary Warren refused to admit to witchcraft only because she was innocent. In the beginning of her time in court, she says “I never saw no spirits” (Miller 1257). Towards the end, when she felt she had no other way out but to lie, Mary Warren blames Proctor for her “participation in witchery” by saying “He wakes me every night, his eyes were like coals and his fingers claw my neck, and I sign, I sign” (Miller 1262)… It is reasonable to say that Abigail killed two birds with one stone by having Mary Warren accused, and after breaking under pressure, having Proctor accused as well. Abigail threatens to kill the girls if they spoke out about any of their forbidden activities. She says to all of them, “Now look all of you. We danced… And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a point reckoning that will shudder you” (Miller 1223)… Abigail also lies about her participation in witchcraft. She never took part in witchcraft, but saw it beneficial to lie and say she
I, John Proctor, am writing to you, the officials of the court, to make a confession about the matter of the ongoing Salem Witch Trials. Abigail Williams, a former servant in my household, is not being truthful when she informs the court that the girls taking part in witchcraft in the woods that night. The Devil found its way into my soul and led me astray. I reveal to you that I had an affair with Abigail Williams. This treachery against my wife and relationship with God is now strained and I tell you my darkest secret in hopes of clearing my wife’s name. Abigail herself told me that she and the other girls were only dancing in the woods. I express my regret for ripping up the warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest. However, I do believe that the court has made a mistake. Arresting Elizabeth for
