Ways of Knowing
Nursing is a very rewording profession which can blossom when incorporated into practice of Carper’s fundamental patterns of thinking. After reading Cotton and Roden article (December 2006 – January 2007), I realized great importance of understanding and implementing four concepts of thinking into daily nursing practice. According to Carper (1978:21-22) empirics, aesthetics, personal and ethical way of knowing in nursing are ‘necessary for achieving mastery in the discipline’. I believe that implementing those four patterns of knowing into daily nursing care is vital in order to provide best quality care for each patient. I tried to convey patient’s wishes to her daughter; I explained that patient is repeatedly begging nurses to stay when found in distress. She would often cry “Just let me stay here with you honey, they will not fix me”. Her daughter was Italian, also an RN who stated “You need to do everything possible for mama, we can’t let her go”. Last time Yolanda was resuscitated and intubated in the hospital. This time she has not returned to facility and died in ICU. It was difficult for me to watch Yolanda’s condition deteriorate, yet I followed family wishes for aggressive treatment. It was my moral obligation as a nurse to advocate for my patient and alleviate her suffering through symptom management every time she was found in respiratory distress. I argue that I employed ethical pattern of thinking for my patient.

Aesthetic Way of Knowing
Aesthetic way of knowing perceives nursing as art with empathy as a crucial component of nursing care. As defined by Carper (1978: 18) is ‘the knowing of unique particular rather than an exemplary class’. I believe that I use the aesthetic way of knowing when taking care of my patients. I remember one day when I took care of Barbara. I went to her room to check her IV antibiotic that was infusing for her diagnosis of sepsis and found Barbra’s husband at her bedside with huge bouquet of flowers in his hands.
