I was pleased to have attended a lecture cosponsored by the Ethics Center, the Fresno State office of the president, the Fresno Bee and Valley PBS. The lecture began with Dr. Castro recognizing a few leaders on campus, including a past Fresno State president, Dr. John D. Welty and campus volunteer Mary Castro. Dr. Castro then mentioned a few things about Mr. Brooks stating that he is a columnist for the New York Times and an analyst for the PBS “News Hour” and NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Dr. Brooks also teaches at Yale University, one the finest university in the country. Dr. Castro continued by saying that he learned that Mr. Brooks office hours are from 9am to 1pm and how “cool” it sounded to him. I was surprised how many people attended the event. I was fortunate to find a seat. David Brooks mentioned how he has some remote roots in the Central Valley because his father grew in Chowchilla, CA but Mr. Brooks grew in New York.

He tells a thrilling story about a young boy whose life changes very fast and it affects all of his family. The character analysis is on Doug Swieteck. In the book “The Juvie Three” by Gordan Korman there are two characters named Gecko and Mr. Healy. They both overcame major obstacles throughout the book. A character named Gecko in the book goes to a halfway home ran by Mr. Healy. Mr. Healy got put into the hospital after getting knocked off the balcony, and he got hurt badly and lost his memory for a while. Both Gecko and Mr.Healy came over big obstacles in the book by working hard, not giving up and not going the easy way.

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines takes place in 1940’s, a time period of segregation. This was a time when blacks were often at fault for a crime they did not commit, such as what transpired in this book. A man named Jefferson was convicted of a crime he did not commit and was insulted during court. Now his family, friends, and even Jefferson himself were trying to prove the white community wrong about their beliefs that a black man is unequal and lacks dignity against Jefferson and the black community. Not only is Jefferson going through a period of suffering on death row, but others, like Grant Wiggins and Miss Emma, are also facing their struggles and they will try to prove others wrong and redeem themselves through knowledge,

In this world bad situations occur frequently and it takes a good strong person to handle them in a mature way. Dealing with them this way not only shows that the person has self-control, but also makes them a good role model for people to look up to. In the book The Chosen, Chaim Potok uses Mr. Galanter to express his opinions of a good role model. Acting as a baseball coach and gym teacher, young boys look to him for guidance and motivation every day. Imagine a four year old, who moves across the pacific to an allegedly heaven-like place expecting to find a better life, but soon comes to find that things are not as carefree as her parents told her. Young Ju, the protagonist in An Na’s novel “A Step From Heaven” is that four year old. Hopeful to start a better life in a place she sees as heaven, she is let down by the realities of the world around her as she is torn apart by her parents abusive and toxic relationship. How can one lead a successful life with such a challenge? A normal individual would have trouble adapting, however Young Ju grows and changes throughout the story to overcome various challenges that she faces.

A Lesson Before Dying A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines tells the story of a black man, Jefferson, with unequal rights, being accused of killing a white man. Although, the accusation was far from being right, he is a black man, and blacks were treated unfairly. Throughout the journey of the trial, Jefferson and Grant became very close, and they both learned a lot from each other and the trial. Grant learns the lesson of being a man, because he develops feelings, and becomes humble.

Throughout The Once and Future King, the author, T.H. White writes of might leaders, who control their subjects through tyranny. The examples given by Merlyn, to Wart, the future King of England, show him exactly how not to rule the country. Three scenes out of this story come to mind when thinking of this theme. The scene in which Wart is under control of Mammy Ant, the scene where Mr. Pike is under control of the moat, finally the scene in which Wart is shown that leading through just and equality leads to a perfect society. Although some may disagree, the lessons young King Arthur is taught do not ultimately lead him to believe that governing by force is desirable.
