After Nick arrives home from a date with Jordan, Nick gets disturbed by Gatsby who tries everything to convince Nick to set up a date with Daisy. Nick finally agrees and invites Daisy for tea. By the time Daisy arrives it starts to rain, Gatsby enters to meet her but it is not successful until a while later they start to warm-up and have a good time. Daisy is the object of desire and passion for Gatsby, she has dominated his life for the past couple years. His original love for her has developed into a love for the idea of her that has let his imagination fill in the blanks which is just setting him up for disappointment. Isn’t it strange how the weather can have such influence over us? How we dress, commute, plan, and even feel? The Great Gatsby, written by F.Scott Fitzgerald, is a book that includes much weather symbolism that makes the characters and the reader perceive certain emotions. The novel consists of a man named Jay Gatsby, and his past lover as well as married woman, Daisy Buchanan. As the novel persists, Gatsby continuously attempts to reclaim Daisy’s love, however these events only lead to bloodshed and heartbreak. Weather, in The Great Gatsby, reflects and captures the main characters’ climactic emotional events. It is constantly and subtly mentioned as turmoil persists, as well as when the truth unravels. Main points mentioned alongside the weather, is when Gatsby and Daisy reunite, when Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby fight with Nick and Jordan to witness, and to conclude, when Gatsby is killed.

He spends his life seeking the attention of his love, Daisy, and as Nick explains, “He wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was…” (Fitzgerald 110). Gatsby sought out the American dream in order to win over the love of Daisy which creates a different perception of himself to Nick. Nick, now knowing Gatsby’s intentions worries about Gatsby’s possible rejection, and then warns him that, “[he] wouldn’t ask too much of her, you can’t repeat the past.” (Fitzgerald 110) But Gatsby, blinded by love, strives to win Nick’s married cousin’s heart. Firstly, the “day agreed upon was pouring rain (pg. 88)”, which immediately shows that, before the two meet, the world is dark, stormy, and depressing, a fact which is reflected in the weather and in the emptiness and quality of Gatsby and Daisy’s lives. But, by the end of the scene Gatsby and Daisy are reaquanted and “the sun shone again (pg. 93),” showing that now they are together the world and their lives will be illuminated and bright. Throughout the Novel, The Great Gatsby the weather seems to be seems to be symbolizing the characters, the way they’re acting or based on their feelings. The weather is supposed to naturally be warm, rainy, cloudy, just the usual but is it a coincidence or is it based/symbolizing what is happening in the book? This is just what I think, the weather is an important symbolic thing in this book that not one person should overlook. If the reader is really into the book and pays attention to everything that is happening, then they’ll see it exactly how I do.

This motif of weather really surprised me. I took me a while to notice how that the weather matched the emotion of this novel. When ever Fitzgerald made a point about the weather, it helps to describe the emotional tone of what is going on. In chapter V when Gatsby gets Nick to set up a meeting with his lost love daisy, Gatsby uses rain and dismal weather which helps set the tone for the affair that is about to take place between Daisy and Gatsby. “They had forgotten me, but Daisy glanced up and held out her hand; Gatsby didn’t know me at all. I looked once more at them and they looked back at me, remotely, possessed by intense life. Then I went down the marble steps into the rain, leaving them there together” (Fitzgerald 96). Then once again weather is used to support the atmosphere. When Tom confronts Gatsby about the affair with his wife, Fitzgerald sets the weather as being extremely hot and scorching. This mirrors the emotions that were present at that time. Lastly, Fitzgerald once more calls upon the weather for Gatsby death. The summer is over and it is the first day of fall. Luhrmann makes use of the heavy rain and cloudy weather to indicate the mood of the characters and their feelings towards situations. The appearance of water in both movies however, is different. In the Great Gatsby, Luhrman uses water in conjunction with weather, specifically bad weather. The weather in Great Gatsby has an active role in letting the audience know when something of significance is occurring it usually brings a sense of foreboding and acts as a foreshadower.
