Many people believe that the rules, customs, traditions, and more found within Canada have been present since the very beginning. Furthermore, our methods in providing justice are consider the views of all individuals. However, many forget or are unaware that the predominately Caucasian population found in Canada are not the original people of this land. The current structures, political system, justice system, views, and values are representative of the Westernized view. On the contrary, Indigenous people have lived in their own society long before colonization occurred and utilized their own beliefs, values, and traditions as structures. Western world view is similar, if not exactly to what is seen in the world today. Monchalin (2016) describes how the Euro-centric idea surrounding income and economy is based on individualized gain and competitiveness. Western views encompass the idea of capitalism, where individuals can grow to success and obtain more wealth and privilege than others. Leadership for Western views were structured in a way where the power was at the top and everyone under had little to no say, and must follow the commands of the leader (Monchalin, 2016). These views of individualized gain, competitiveness, and outright powers of leaders directly correlates to their view on justice. Since Western views of justice value the individual over the rest of society, the criminal justice system has been structured to ignore others. For example, Monchalin (2016) described how in today’s world, polluting a water source results in a fine at most, whereas in First Nations society it is much more severe.
