To start off, what does bilingual actually mean? The definition says that bilingual is a word that refers to a person who can speak two languages with the fluency of a native and a polyglot or multilingual referes to a person who can speak or write in many languages. Being bilingual is a great goal that a person could have. Many studies suggest that bilingual children maybe have increased cognitive abilities. In other words, bilingualism is present in differing degrees in all countries that are officially monolingual, some, such as Japan, have few bilinguals, others, such as the Western European nations, have an increasing number of people who speak two or more languages. (Life with Two Languages – An Introduction to Bilingualism by Francois Grosjean) There is ample behavioral evidence that shows that people who grow up with two languages are more sensitive to different sound structures, “this is very good because they have an enriched experience because of their diverse language exposure,” Dr. Luk said. Currently, in Europe, there are two studies that focus on children’s brain structures, “the highways in our brain that connect distant brain areas,” that have determined that children who speak two languages since birth have these more integrated than monolingual children or children that learnt a second language later in life. There is still a lot more to research about the brain, but one thing is for certain, speaking two languages is an asset in today’s world. It will place you on top of the list when applying for jobs, not to mention about college applications, and in our global society it is useful in many everyday situations. Being able to navigate across cultures is essential, and having another language on your side is definitely a step forward.
