Fiction is very important and valuable on our school board, it should stay in our educational systems. All fictional stories have special and deep meanings that can make your reading experiences very relatable. In the novel, "Gabi: A Girl in Pieces" by Isabel Quintero, we read about a girl named Gabi that is entering her senior year of high school and uses a diary to write down the events that come into play during her senior year. All types of fiction are meant to stay in our school board and have a place in the curriculum because they have all sorts of problems within them that many people experience. When reading a novel, specifically fiction, they all seem to have real-life problems embedded inside them. They all show characters that aren’t …show more content…
Homophobia is also a very important topic to talk about primarily because it affects so many people. Such as being a part of the LGBTQ+ community and wanting to come out to your parents but one of them is homophobic and it scares you to death about coming out. For example, “Apparently his dad said something like, ‘Odio a los jotos! I hate fags!...’The two worst things that could happen to a man is that his wife sleeps with another man and that his son is gay’...’You ruined my life, Chingado! Hijo de puta! Get out of my house! I don’t want to see you ever again. You are no son of mine,” (Quintero 21-22). Disownment due to being a part of the LGBTQ+ community is a huge issue. LGBTQ+ youth make up more than 40% of the population of the homeless youth. Disowning a child due to their sexuality is absolutely not okay and it makes matters worse for a child. “‘Do you have a girlfriend, handsome?’ Before I could warn him about tia Bertha, he laughed and said. ‘Girlfriend? No! But I have a boyfriend.’...Tia Bertha didn’t shut up about the sinfulness of two men together…” (Quintero 50). With the way some parents react to their child being “gay”, it makes the child forced to be “straight” or something they are not that ultimately result in unhappiness and many other situations. The thought of children being abandoned due to their comfort in their sexuality truly scares me. It shows that our …show more content…
As stated before, as we read through, “Gabi: A Girl in Pieces”, by Isabel Quintero, we see Gabi overcome her struggle by accepting herself and not giving a care in the world what other people think of her. When accepting yourself when it comes to struggles that come mentally, emotionally, or even physically, it feels like a dream to be free and only thinks on the positive aspect of life when finally crushing the thing that has held you back the most. Reading about characters that are in a crisis and are focusing on their struggle and they eventually solve it really helps people understand about the issues at hand and that they are real-life issues that reoccur in society today. Fictional stories must stay in our educational systems and our school boards because without them we would only see how the real world handles these situations and how fiction takes a different turn on these situations by either making the worse or the
I highly recommend Gabi A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero to people of all ages and genders, especially to teenagers. I enjoyed this novel because it was non fiction and really showed a relatable take on a teenager’s life and the struggles teens face.
The school board is not quite certain that schools should continue to include fiction in the curriculum. However, if fiction is taught to students it may actually teach life lessons. Fictional literature can change someone's perspective on, what problems we may come across. For instance, a fictional book can help us relate to all the controversial problems that do occur in today's society. I disagree with the school board's thoughts about completely banning it. This type of literature can deepen our knowledge and teach us about things that we don’t experience on a day to day basis.
In result, children will be forced to grow up faster than they should be. In this book however it may be real in some situations in life, it is a fake story about a young black male who gets wrongfully accused of stealing. He is then abused by a police officer who was on duty at the time and ends with injuries that puts him in the hospital.Without having fiction we would have never thought of how badly police can act upon and black male. This helps us see more situations on whether or not the police or citizen was at fault. Fiction needs to be included in the curriculum because we can never imagine situations that can often happen in real life.
As a family member of an LGBTQ youth I have observed and heard about the harsh conditions that these children are dealing with. There are thousands of homeless LGBTQ youth across the country for simply being gay and expressing their sexuality, these youth are either pushed out of their homes or run away and forced into circumstances that nobody should have to face. By researching the special needs of the LGBTQ homeless youth and the resources available to them in my community, I hope to advocate for more awareness and inspire change and understanding of their flight.
Fiction novel’s shows us the views and perspective others. This type of literature help us gain a more broader perspective and can teach us more about our society. The idea of banning fictional novels is a very foolish idea. These novels do more good than they do harm and are beneficial for our curriculum and learning. Taking away this literature will not benefit our learning and will only harm our learning. “Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity.’’ said G.K. Chesterton.

Shouldn't fiction be part of students’ curriculum in their academics? School board across the states no longer has a place for fiction in school curriculum. From the beginning of time, many of native storytellers carry morals through generations of passing down customs, history and heritage. Such as Always Running by Luis Rodriguez, there are morals into which one retell and learns from mistakes. It is important today in which storytelling had been around from cave paintings, movies to novels. Without history, without the storytelling, mankind would not learn from their mistakes, never dream of heroes like Alfred Einstein and would not acknowledge anything of the past. Mankind would bewildered of the past, then eventually will be hopeless in
Should fiction be in the curriculum? Taking fiction out of the curriculum can hurt students a lot. Fiction books teach about issues that are faced by people everyday. That most people probably don't see often. When others are faced with it daily. In this essay i will explain the problem presented in my book, gang violence. I will compare the story to everyday problems with gang violence. And explain why it is important to keep fiction books in the curriculum.
LGBT children suffer and go through more than what the world wants to see or deal with. LGBT children are bullied and abused by people all over the country because they like the same sex or they want to be a different sex. When LGBT give up a place to stay or food to eat or even their education they are left to fend for themselves. More than half of the homeless LGBT in
In english class, one is most likely to read at least one fiction novel throughout the school year. Fiction books, while reading them, create images in your mind, therefore making them enjoyable to read. Novels often express a central theme that teaches the reader a lesson or helps them critically think about morality, their future, their fears, or their purpose in life. Books excites the imagination, and reflects the world we live in. For example, in “All American Boys” by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, the book includes events that fall under police brutality.
In my paper I will be discussing homophobia in schools and how it affects students and even teachers. Homophobia in schools is the leading cause of suicide and depression among teenagers and young adults. I believe that this is a crucial situation and needs to be addressed both at home and in school. School officials must be permitted and comfortable with addressing issues of homosexuality and homophobia that students may have. This is crucial in not only enabling a LGBT teenager to get an education that is in a non-hostile environment, but also in enabling the student to become a strong confident adult.
Despite the school board’s recent sentiments regarding the lack of value that fiction provides, fiction should remain in the school’s curriculum due to the life lessons, improves empathy, and expands your vocabulary. The first claim
Every day in the United States, a young person, under the age of eighteen faces homelessness, and most often it’s because of others. In a report by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, it was noted that 26% of LGBTQ youth were kicked out of their homes when they came out (Ray, 2006). The Urban Justice League reports numbers as high as 78% of LGBTQ youth that “were removed from or left their foster care placements because they were un-welcoming or hostile towards their sexual orientation and/or gender identity ” (Feinstein, Greenblatt, Hass, Kohn, & Rana, 2001). The United States is an independent, individualistic country; we prize the freedom of expression, but do we really? One of the most significant, if not the most important, social structures is the family. Gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals who are aware of their sexuality, must create an alternative self to present to family and friends, especially if there is an understanding, verbalized or implicit, that homosexuality is not tolerated, or simply wrong. Many gay, lesbian and bisexual men and women would rather go with the flow, assimilate, not make waves, rather than to express their own gay identity, and risk ostracism.
I believe fiction is absolutely necessary in curriculum because, majority of the time, it has real issues that are present in today’s society offering a guide to society in the modern day.
Is it important to read non-fiction books in 6th grade language arts. That is a question that my teacher has been asking for a long time. I think we should read nonFiction books or articles. It is good to read nonfiction because if all you read is fiction you what is going on in the world, there would be no text books or online articles, and when 6th grade students go on into 7th and 8th and into high school they would be lost.
