Aim of life skills in education is at the elimination and negotiation of the gap between the content of education and the living experience of students.
Education ideally must prepare the students to face the challenges of life. For this, it needs to be linked with the different life skills, by developing in them generic skills related to a wide variety of areas such as health and social needs (NCFSE,2000). Benefits of Teaching Life-Skills

Life skills play an important role for becoming successful professionally and improving our personal lives. Oprah, in her lifeclass video, talks about being responsible for yourself and not waiting for anyone else to change the circumstances around you as a way to develop the skills necessary to flourish. The story of Robert Sherfields first experience at community college, “How Community College Changed My Life” tells of how Mr. Sherfield let go of his past failures and worked toward a better future for himself. The quote by Charles Noble “First we make our habits, then our habits make us!” is great to remember when developing the life skills necessary to continue to grow in all aspects of our lives. The video, story and quote can all be connected, good habits produce responsible people. Responsible people are aware of their
Teaching is not merely about methods used and material presented in the classroom, but about shaping students’ lives to help them construct a firm foundation for a successful future. I desire to teach my students basic life skills as well as challenge them to set and reach their highest goals.
One of David’s conclusion is that people besides learning and acquiring practical skills from the formal education or training. People also need something more than the practical skills, which is something of a different nature and it is something someone concludes self. Swenson states that youth requires developing a view of life in order to become a good person in moral and developed personalities. The view of life is not acquired through training and learning provided by general means of formal education or experience, but is obtained individually through thinking over someone’s life, self-exploring and subjective conviction. The reason for developing such view of life is that view of life is the mean of giving one’s life. “it is a principle of living, a spirit and an attitude capable of maintaining its unity and identity with itself in all of life’s complexities and varying vicissitudes.” Said by Swenson. It is the sense, dignity and worth. Otherwise, a life cannot be considered to be as living in a human

Substance abuse disorders are common in our society. It is a disorder that each one of us will most likely experience through a family member, friend, or our self. I felt very drawn to this topic due to the fact that I have a family that has background of substance abuse and I myself have battle the demon. Not until I struggled with my own addiction did I become more tolerable and understanding to those that have a substance abuse disorder. Substance abuse is not something anyone wants to have; it is a disorder that takes control of a person’s life. It is a beast that tears a person apart; from their being to the lives of their loved ones. This disorder is not biased in anyway; rich or poor, male or female, employed or unemployed, young or
Mari-Jane Williams (2013) beautifully articulated the importance of teaching life skills to teenagers in an article written for the Washington Post titled “Life skills all teens should have before graduating from high school.” In the article Williams writes:
b) Why it is important to provide opportunities for learners to develop their English, Mathematics, ICT and wider skills such as communication, personal and employability (ref. 1.3)
Another life skill that i used was was morals and vaules. I stood up for what i believed in. I thought things could be good when we ended up moving to Wyoming and thought that it could be good for me and that i would maybe learn something good from it. I thought that it could maybe have a lot of good effects could come out of
Youth engage in an after school program to develop their life skills. The after school program focus on youth obtaining skills to manage their life (Harvey & Coleman, 1997). These skills includes conducting business, expanding education and; self-awareness and spiritual balance. Youth are taught self-determination to express their creativity. They are instructed to think innovatively to build within the areas they are interested rather than destroy their community (Harvey & Coleman,
Basic life skills are defined as psychosocial abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges for everyday life (UNICEF). Taking that into consideration, high school students should be presented with the opportunity to take basic life skills courses within their high school career. In a way, it is ridiculous that basic life skills are not offered as a course in high school being that the students are there to get an education. It would be sensible if education was a combination of excelling in classes and life.
Prevention methods for substance abuse are taught to children as early in their kindergarten years and follow throughout their lifetime. Current programs available are school-based programs, parent and family, work programs and community and public media campaigns.
Finally, after a student has successfully completed the life skills course, both the student and parents will be asked to provide a constructive evaluation of the curriculum. This phase allows the student’s parents to be actively involved in the student’s education, as well as receive their input on additional skills that should be included. Additionally, obtaining feedback will further improve the course for future PPEC
Substance abuse and addiction have become a social problem that afflicts millions of individuals and disrupts the lives of their families and friends. Just one example reveals the extent of the problem: in the United States each year, more women and men die of smoking related lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined (Kola & Kruszynski, 2010). In addition to the personal impact of so much illness and early death, there are dire social costs: huge expenses for medical and social services; millions of hours lost in the workplace; elevated rates of crime associated with illicit drugs; and scores of children who are damaged by their parents’ substance abuse behavior (Lee, 2010).
